Perm to Temp role

    Hi
    I've been with my employer on a permanent basis for over 5 years now.
    Last year, I took on a new position in the department, but it was for a fixed term 12 month period. (There was no new contract signed)
    I'm getting close to the end of the 12 months and wondering where I stand should I not wish to continue the role after the 12 month period has ended. The person I replaced will not be returning from maternity leave.
    I presume I would go back to my previous position, but if for example that position is no longer vacant, where does that leave me? Does my employer have to find a similar role for me ?
    (Very foolish that I'm asking this now and not 12 months ago, I'm well aware :/ )
