creative sound card nightmare

    Hey guys

I've already posted this on the audio-video editing section and they sent me here so i hope some one can shed some light on my problems.

I've recently bought a 2nd hand Dell, 2.5ghz processor, 512mb of DDr ram, Two hard drives one is an 80 gig the other A 20 gig. (i want to put all the apps and OS on this smaller but havent got around to it yet)

Its got a Dual moniter Geforce card and Ive got 2 moniters working fine with it.
A friend gave me an unwanted Creative Audigy Platium EX
( its not an audidgy 2). it has the firewire and mini midi connections on the front, It has the external panel on the front of the computer.
Its not connected to the net, and is running XP Pro.

Having installed Reason, Cubase, Fruity loops etc I wanted to get the system to accepted the new card so I could begin recording my own tunes.

I've two 88 key weighted keyboards and play a number of instruments which I had hoped to record one at a time through the Line in on the sound card.
The card seemed prefect for what I wanted to do, which is basically Lay stuff down one track at a time and just keep layering the tunes up.

The problem Im facing is that the Creative Card doesn't seem to work, I cant gat the midi to respond. Cubase is allowing Playback But a friend says it could just be reverting to the on board Sound card.

Reason is playing but no sound is coming out, and now my Cd playback has been affected so I cant even play a CD

Ive checked Creatives Downloads and have had a hell of a time trying to find the newest drivers for such a old Card. Im hoping its just the drivers, But if not how can I check the card actually works, and should I Just format everything with the new card? Also does anyone have a preference for an OS
to use with these Programs cos if im going to format everything then I may as well put on the most Productive OS.

Another Problem which might help is that every time I shut the comp down Creative Launcher Starts up and I cant turn the comp off till I end prog.

Its driving me mad all I want to do is record, and Im not really a techie so I just cant get it to work any advice would be greatly appreicated!
    Cheers Inner I

Cubase is allowing Playback But a friend says it could just be reverting to the on board Sound card.
    Ok, check this..
Start>>Run>>mmsys.cpl (this is just a quick way to get to the control panels audio properties)
On this page, open the 'Audio' tab and make sure the items selected in the drop-down boxes reflect the new audio device you want to use.
Change as needed and click OK when done.

    Start>>run>>sndvol32
Check that nothing you need is muted... you may have to open "options" then "properties" to make sure it's controling volume from the right sound device and that the sound ports you want to check are visible on the main volume page.
Another Problem which might help is that every time I shut the comp down Creative Launcher Starts up and I cant turn the comp off till I end prog.
If I recall correctly there should be an option from the menu of the Creative Launcher to disable it starting automatically with windows. (try right-clicking on one of the buttons or graphics)
If it doesn't or it's not the same launcher I think it is, you can disable it from here:
    Start>>Run>>msconfig
From here, open the "startup" tab and locate this program from the list and un-check it.
Identifying it on the list should be straight forward enough as it's possibly located in a \creative\ directory (or similar) or would appear as a shorthand name like ctlauncher.

I'd also double-check the wiring from the soundcard to the front panel just to make sure everything is go.

Just as a by the way Creative has its own news server news.creative.com might be a place to pick up some hints. Creative staff used to answer some posts not sure if they still do.

Just another point if there is onboard sound have you disabled it in the bios and got rid of any associated drivers?

Have you tried here (US Creative) for the drivers you were looking for? Seems to be plenty of downloads available?

Depending on your sound card there should be an option for output, Autosense, anolog, digital. Usually what happens some program or direct x update changes this. If you have analog speakers set to analog etc

Dub45 cheers for the link the US site seems to have it all.

I.ve just downloaded the new drivers and am going to install I'll let you know how I get on.

It says the on-board sound card is disabled in the Bios and the sound card is enabled in the system hardware section so hopefully the new drivers will sort it out.

Greenman cheers for the concern i'll keep you posted (i feel like I'm on some type of internet soap opera you'll just have to tune next week for the chilling finale)
