Removal of Cast Iron Soil Pipe

    Hi,

Looking for some help with this one. Had to post in DIY as couldn't find the right Category!

I've been getting quotes for new guttering, facia and soffit etc, but any companies I've contacted so far have said that they don't remove the cast iron soil pipe, that a plumber would have to do this!

I've asked a plumber I know, and he's told me that the company removing the old gutters and downpipe would normally include the supply & fit of a new soil pipe!

Anyone any recommendations of a company that would do this? Or has anyone gotten theirs replaced and know of anyone who would do it?

    I'm based in Dublin

Generally speaking the soil pipe is completely separate to guttering.

So yes those companies are accurate.

Why are you removing the soil btw? Continuity?

Leave the sewer pipe, paint it bright red!
the plumber is yanking your chain

It's rusted to bits and just looks shabby! So yeah basically just want it replaced with pvc pipe as I'm getting rid of the cast iron gutters and replacing them with pvc

I'd leave the old pipe but if you want it removed then a plumber is the one to do it. As said above, the sewer /vent pipe is not part of the guttering. Personally I wouldn't want a pvc gutter company to replace the soil pipe. Definitely a plumber is best option

If it were me. I'd take back the rusty bits and flakes with a drill and a drill wire brush.

Prime it and then paint it .

Cast iron will last hundred years plus and still look well when your pvc pipe will still exist but be worn out by the sun .

If it goes directly into the ground, then it will be cut off a bit above ground level and something like a multi wick used to make the connection, which will look worse than the contents of the sewer:D

    Whats wrong with the gutter/downpipes?
    what age is the house?

We bought the house in 2019. My neighbour told me when I moved in that an old woman lived here and nothing was done to the house in about 25 years, it showed! the whole house was totally run down. We had some job getting it back up to modern standards. The house was built late 70's

I just got a quote of €1589 to remove soil pipe and replace it with new pvc pipe.

That's more than what it's costing me to get new gutters!

As I said. There would not nothing wrong with it. Strip it back with drill and wire brush. Prime then paint it. It's a days work.

Use some form of mask when sanding/grinding as a painted pipe like that is likely to have a good amount of lead in the old paint.

Wake me up when it's all over.

You absolutely sure it's cast iron? Just check before you sand in case it's an asbestos cement pipe, we has one on a late 1969s house we renovated.

OP said it's rusted, so must be cast iron. Check if a magnet sticks to it.
