Considering a MK6 Golf GTD, thoughts?

I know everyone will say wait for the Mk7, but I’m a student working part time and the MK6 GTD is already stretching my budget.
For the same price I could get a 1.6 TDI MK7, maybe even a 2L, but I’d rather the GTD.

    I’m coming from a 2004 MK5 base model 1.4 petrol Golf.

The car I’m looking at is a UK import, I’ve checked the history it all looks good.
It’s got heated black leather seats, multifunction steering wheel, and a few other extras I didn’t pay attention to.

128k miles, full service history, stamps & receipts.
Timing belt, clutch and flywheel were done in the last year or two.
All carried out by a local mechanic who’s well regarded.

It’s €10k, 2012, it’s on the higher end of the MK6s but it’s the best one I could find, it’s also right on my way to work.

It’s not much of an upgrade from the MK5 but in terms of power, feel, interior it’ll be much better.

I’ve heard some bad things about the MK6, I actually prefer the looks to the MK7, everyone I know seems to have a MK7.

    Is it worth it?

I open to disagreement but I would have thought 128k miles for that kind of money was a bit high for a car like that.

They’re all in or around that that’s definitely on the lower end, but it’s also a year or so newer than the others for sale.
    He’s asking €10850, I’d probably get it for 10.
It’s a little high compared to other models on offer but one sold in a garage just up the road from me a few days ago.
It was an 2011, 148k miles, with a slightly lower spec, and that went for €9750.

If your happy with the mk6 then go for it but if you have any doubt that your settling for it because you can’t afford a mk7 then maybe you should just wait until you can afford a mk7. That being said a mk6 GTD is still a big improvement over a base mk5

Me personally I wouldn’t buy an end of production model (2012 mk6). I think most people would rather spend an extra couple of grand and get a 2013 mk7.

There is a world between a Mk6 and a Mk7 but at the same time, what you never had, you'll never miss.

If you like the car and the price is right, then go for it. Sure there'll always be something more expensive than it that's nicer than it, same applies to most cars.

You're still talking €14-15k for a tidy enough early Mk7 GTD which is 50% more than OP's budget.

Being a English import you'd want to get it up on a ramp to check for corrosion underneath couldn't believe the amount of rust on a 2014 mark 7 Golf I was looking at for my daughter ..

Maybe do the sums and see no much of your disposable income would be going on the car.

Sorry to put a downer on the thread but students working part time might stretch themselves buying and running one?

Sure what is it really only a diesel Golf though in terms of running costs. That's half the beauty of them i'd say.

Do take into consideration your daily usage as well (city/highway driving), I got a mk6 GTD as my 1st car last year (€7500, 2011 model, 150k miles), but ended up with a clogged DPF 6 months and 4000kms usage after my purchase due to only city driving and once a week highway driving. Looking back at the decision of buying a diesel for my usage looks silly but I did not know have much knowledge of modern diesels.

I'd definitely get the use out of a diesel anyway, 90% of my commute is a long haul.

That being said I think I'll pass on the GTD, the ownership just seemed a little off to me.

I was told it was brought in by a friend of the current owner, but records show the original owner only had it a month, then someone had it for 22 months, but the current owner only had it 2 months.
It was either in his name a lot longer than he said (which wouldn't make sense) or it was in the previous owners name and he didn't want me to know, which again didn't make sense.

Just too much effort and pretty much top dollar for it.

Would you not consider getting a MK3 Seat Leon FR 184, if you can get one in budget since they are a GTD under the skin

This is a great suggestion. Save a grand or so in the process and a newer year

That seems suspiciously cheap for a 184 FR
