    Morning All,

What is the difference between a 50w downlighter vs 10w downlighter?

    Is 50w less energy efficient?

Watts is the amount of Power it uses

A 50Watt downlight uses 50 Watts per hour so 20Hrs to use one unit of Elec

A 10Watt uses 10 Watts so 100hrs to use one Unit of electricty

As regards Efficiency of Down lights well this would be the amount of light produced by each some Downlights use a lot of power producing heat ie Halogen ones

Some produce less heat ie led ones

So a 10W Led downlight could be more efficient than a 50W Halogen one in terms of Light output

Could the light also be LED if it is 50w?

    Not impossible but quite unlikely.

Of you install a 5 or 8 watt bulb with the downlight still use 50watts per hour?

No, it will use the 5 or 8w.

You can check the Lumen output on the different bulbs to see if they are (roughly) comparable. Personally, I've found the latest generation of LED from Osram or Philips to be above the light output from older incandescent or halogen bulbs when they hit about 6-8W (when replacing a 50W downlight bulb).
