I paid 85 for one about 4 years ago. Another local shop wanted 180 for what looked the same.
    Both were no name products

The shorts are noticeably short. Hard to mistake them if you've seen or used them. They're for sheep so ask for a cattle version.
Close them and hold the touching surfaces up to a light source to check them.

I think 18" are the long ones.

Just checked, mine is 18" in total length closed. Never store them closed!

Keep it clean and oiled. Better still, store in an oily rag..... open. Usually bolts can be replaced. Spanner for them was designed by a fiend!

Roughly the same as this. 19" long and don't store it closed.

Often considered getting a burdizzo here to castrate leftover ramlambs late in the year but would afraid I'd make a mess of it? What level of training /knowledge would you need to successfully use one

Get someone to show you by doing a few while you hold them. Then swap.

Sit them on their backside, hindlegs through a figure-of-eight loop of cord while you stand on it and yield your instrument.

Why that bass? Not even 3 in 1 oil?

Is that the tool that came with it

No. The chrome finish on the handles is prone to rusting.
