Joint Assessment/Tax refund

    Hi All,

Apologies if this has been asked a bunch of times already. I did a search and cant seem to find the answer specific to my case.

My wife and I were separately assessed for 2020.
My wife was on paid maternity leave until March at which point she was on parental/unpaid leave for the remainder of the year.

Is it possible for me to file a tax return now for 2020 and have us jointly assessed or does she need to separately claim back the tax herself? The reason I ask is that I need to file a return anyway to claim back working from home expenses from March to December so ideally we could kill two birds with one stone.

I'm also looking into advice on how we can be jointly assessed for 2021. Everywhere I read says you can do this on ROS but I dont have an edit option to change to jointly assessed when I go into my PAYE services in ROS.

Thanks in advance for any help.

To update your Marital Status for 2021 log in to My Account, go to Manage my Record (purple box near the bottom), and select Update Civil Status. Both yourself and your wife need to have registered for My Account to do this.

For info on claiming joint assessment for previous years go to: https://www.revenue.ie/en/life-events-and-personal-circumstances/marital-status/marriage-and-civil-partnerships/taxation-after-year-of-marriage-or-registration-of-civil-partnership.aspx
