What's the '3' symbol on my VW Passat screen?

Can anyone tell me what the '3' inside the circle means? It's a Dynaudio Discover Pro screen. The number varies from 1 to 9 (and once it was 9+) and sometimes it disappears, to be replaced by the Bluetooth symbol.

I cannot find any reference to it in the owners manual. I thought it might be related to the number of unread texts or alerts on my phone but there's no correlation when I check.

Is it your mobile phone network by any chance?

I don't think so. I'm on the Three network ok, but the number varies from 1 to 9 and occasionally 9+.

No, I already checked that and it's there even when I have no notifications at all.

Nope. It's on RTE Radio One 90% of the time and Newstalk for the other 10%. Presets 1 & 2.

    No. I just tried that:

and sometimes it just shows the bluetooth icon:

I also have no unread texts or Whatsapps.

It looks CarNet related, have you RSS feeds enabled?

I don't think so, unless they're enabled by default?

I think Car-Net is now called WeConnect. I did set up a users profile when I got the Passat last Feb but I subsequently deleted it as I found it more hassle than it was worth.

Is it something like how many Bluetooth devices are nearby/available to pair to?

Could easily get to 3 if you have a smart watch and wireless headphones with you usually?

Don't think so - the most bluetooth items I'd have would be three. .. phone smart watch and maybe a tablet. Yesterday I noticed the number was 7 and another day recently it read 9 with a 'plus' sign just right of the circle. There's no pattern that I can discern. I wondered if it was nearby mobile phone signal masts maybe?

pretty sure it’s the number of gps satellites that a strong signal is currently being received from.
Our golf discover pro shows it on the nav home screen as ‘gps strength’, usually something like “3/10”, and a few minutes later “11/14”, or “3/9” and so on and on

That's interesting. I hadn't thought of gps sat signal data.

I'll have a closer look at the manual tomorrow to see if there's any info on it.

I remember when I bought the car asking someone in the local VW dealer, who was supposed to be a tech guru, and he couldn't figure it either.

Next time you park in a multistorey / underground car park . Check what number appears when you get back to the car, and if the number increases after you leave.

Drove into town today. 3.5km drive. After starting the car, the number displayed was 1, then quickly went to 5,7,9 and 9+

    [IMG][/img]Ko0vwyvl.jpg

Parked in town for 30 mins approx, restarted the car and it was back to 3 and remained at 3 as I went into a supermarket underground car park near my home. Parked there for 15 mins, re-started the car and it still displayed 3.

    [IMG][/img]xGFKYXPl.jpg

Stayed at 3 during driving home, 1km.

Yeh id say its gps satellites. When you said it ranged 1-9 i thought 9 was a bit of a low number to max out on satellites but i see in your latest pic its goes to 9+ which makes more sense

Why would you need to know how many satellites you’re in range of?

Perhaps to gauge the accuracy of the GPS location displayed?

Is three the minimum when your GPS is active and working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

Looking at the fact that TP is also displayed, is it the number of traffic program stations currently in tuning range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

Just did a google search using

    TP display on Dynaudio

There's a link to volkspage.net pdf file, wont download for me but the description mentions TP button and TP programs/stations

    You need 3 to triangulate

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If 1/2 show up and gsp isnt active/working that could indicate it's confirmed satellite connections.

Maybe this? Can you swipe down?

Yes, I can swipe down. Hadn't known about this feature on the touchscreen till now.

The drop-down screen has a notifications panel (see below) with two notifications (corresponding to the indicated number in the small circle on the screen) but they're a bit confusing - at least to me with my limited understanding of modern auto infotainment systems.

The first notification, "Data connection unavailable, please switch on the ignition" is showing even though the ignition is turned on.

Maybe there are still bugs in the VAG software?

Sounds like that is it then.

It would be interesting to see what’s in that list when it says 9+!!

The two you showed above sound like you are in a bad mobile reception area and the eSIM can’t get signal?

Yeah, I'll be interested to see what those 9+ notifications are. I haven't noticed any issues with connectivity etc.

I'll have to check further tomorrow re phone signal strength. I'm in Limerick City suburbs so would have thought the signal was ok, but I was parked up to the front of my house when I took that photo so there may be some poor signal spots locally near high buildings.

At least I now know the source of the mystery numbers!

Can't you just download car manual and check in there?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,907 ✭✭✭Comhrá

I have the car manual but it doesn't appear to cover this particular item. There's no reference to 'notifications' in the manual despite many pages of instructions re connectivity etc. The satnav, bluetooth and phone works just fine and that's about all I need.

I merely asked here out of curiosity, in case there was a simple explanation for something I hadn't figured out.

Like many owners of modern cars, I have no real need for much of the more advanced technology such as driver profile and/or online functions etc.

I suspect much of the content of these extensive and complex manuals remain unread by their owners.

I think eSIM is the internal sim in the unit, maybe you need to renew your subscription.

I have no subscription. Never bought one. Car is just 11 months old. Those notification numbers I posted about have been popping up since I bought the car.
I asked the VW dealer about them but they had no idea.

First world problem in any case. :)

On the Nav screen you can can chose to see the number of satellites connected. See if the number is the same maybe?
