Hi, im currently extending and am planning for a number of downlights in New kitchen area. Single storey extension, warm flat roof. Instead of buying and taping in thermohoods would low profile downlighters work instead. I'm putting a 50mm insulated slab on the ceiling and a hoping there a slim enough lights to fit the recess instead of having to cut the airtightness membrane for thermohoods. Has anyone experience of these types of lights? Thanks in advance.

Yes you can get low profile led lights. I've come across recessed LED Spot lights that are only 20mm thick. Not much thicker than the skimmed plasterboard. Issues I've come across is when you need a transformer these are usually the thickest bigger part that needs to be hidden. Now I have used slim led spot lights that are 240 volts and therefore don't need the transformer. I'd suggest you get these although I'm not an electrician and an electrician might have comments on the advantages of requirements of the transformer.

But as outlined By dudda above, the butchery to get the units into an insulated slab may not be worth it.

I used these but had a 50mm cavity +12mm slab

I used these through my renovations.

But I counterbattened any roof so I didn’t penetrate any of the insulation layer.
