Have cars gotten more expensive, suddenly?

I'd have thought at the moment, that many would be flogging their cars as they work from home, and as such, there might be a lot of variety.

About 4 months ago (roughly) I picked up a 152 Megane Estate, 1.5 diesel, for €7,250. Was a good price at the time, in fairness, but I was looking at a couple of Meganes with similar year on the reg plate, for similar money.

Friend of mine has said she wants to change her car. She's looking for a 2015 or newer hatchback along the lines of what she already has (an Astra). I figured a budget of 7k, seen as it nabbed me a nice enough Megane, would be plenty for a decent sized hatchback.

But nope. Nothing to be had unless it's a mini (i10, Swift, Fiat500). She's looking for a petrol, but I found the lack of choice odd, so i broadened my donedeal search to include all fuel types, just to see what results I'd get, and it hasn't helped at all.

The nearest thing I can find to my own car, a 152 Megane, that I paid 7,250 for, is a 161 selling for 10,950.

Am I missing something? Is it just the wrong time of year to be looking to get a car?

I think good value in some cars and budgets and its poor for others. Better off sticking with what she has if value is poor at the moment...

Supermini's being the only option at the price and year makes sense. Helped the mother buy a car over the summer with near the same requirements and that was all there was. Ended up with an Astra saloon for about €8000.

How on earth did you grab a Megane for that cheap? Was the mileage through the roof?

The mileage on the one I got (152 for €7,250) was about 160km. So not extortionate miles. It was a good price, but I wasn't panic-buying because it was so cheap, and it sat there for a week or two while i was looking.

Now, when I was looking, I was really only looking at estates/MPVs (Ford Galaxy was on my radar, Megane estate, Insignia estate, etc.) but I felt like I had a lot more variety in August, than I do with the same search criteria now.

Part of the problem may be looking for a petrol in a class of car that inexplicably (well not inexplicably but its wrong) became dominated by diesels in the year you were looking for. IMO theres no need for small family cars to be overwhelmingly diesel. But i don't see any evidence that cars went up in value. Just doesn't happen apart from some unusual and rare metal which the Megane isn't.

First one l linked is 6350, second one 7550

The lower mileage ones are dearer as expected but you should have no problem picking up a decent Megane 2015 for under 8k .160k kms would be very much on the higher end of mileage spectrum for a 2015 megane so would be among the cheapest examples to be honest.

Less supply due to people not buying and trading in, covid worries impending brexit

Tbf that's double the 'average' mileage of a vehicle per year. If it was a OEM finance vehicle they'd have penalised that sort of mileage.

It's not insignificant to the valuation

Roughly 30km per year. I wouldn't consider it out of the ordinary for a diesel. Most cars I've owned would have had similar mileage history. (I personally would do twice that, handy enough, so it doesn't really bother me in the first place, but it was still one of a few I had a choice on).

She has diesel at the moment, and although it's been good to her and hasn't given many real issues at all, pretty much everyone else she knows has had DPF/DMF issues, anti-pollution faults etc. and I think she's concerned about getting a diesel that comes with expensive repairs.

Petrol seems to be a 'safer' option, as she's less likely to spend as much money on it in potential repairs, and her mileage lately would be in petrol territory more than diesel (and is unlikely to change going forward).

(personally, considering her current car isn't giving huge issues, and it's not worth a whole lot, i reckon she should keep it til it dies, and then look at something else, but I think there's a want for something different).

She'd be the kinda person that buys a car and has it for about 7-8 years (based on her last 2 cars) so I think that's in her head. She doesn't want to be dealing with DPF issues in a years time because she's only pottering in and out of town.
