Did the relief change in the last few years i.e prior to 2016. Im in the process today of claiming health expenses relief for 2016 and when I opened the system I noticed elief for fees subject to, what I might call, an excess.
Im sure when I checked this back around 2010 when no. 1 was in Uni, the relief was only available to second child - perhaps I misread/misunderstood. Any help would be appreciated.

Nowadays at least, the first €3,000 in fees paid are disregarded

So if you paid €4,000, you'd only be able to claim relief on €1,000, which would be a €200 credit as 20% is the credit rate same as medical expenses

The standard contribution fees are €3,000 so unless you have several children in college, or attending college abroad where the fees are higher you're unlikely to be able to claim anything

    Thanks for the reply.
I see that on the Revenue site - the disregard amount. From memory my lads 'charge' was E7,000. However he was on a 'schol' and so had to pay half ie 3,500. I presume the disregard would be 1,500 in that case? That leaves the claimable amount as 2,000 which is worth making at 20%. I see the same course is now about 7,300 going by UCD site giving 7,574 including student centre levy so 7k seems about right.

Lower disregard amount is only for part time courses I think

As EverythingGood says, the lower amount of 1500 is for part time courses, so long as your lad is in a full time course it will be 3000 that is disregarded

Student union or centre charges are not eligbile for relief, only the tuition fees

The academic registry or admin department in UCD should be able to give a breakdown of the fees if you all you have is a total, they could also be available in the online portal where you paid the fees as well
