Google Analytics - Conversion Tracking

    Hi,

Posted this originally in the Internet Marketing & SEO forum but it's a bit quiet, so hoping for a response from the knowledgeable guys over here.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction, there are some very basic questions coming up!

I am looking through the Google Support site and going down a few rabbit holes!

My 2 Wordpress with WooCommerce sites were built in 2012, with a few rebuilds / refreshes since then.
Google Analytics is working fine (I think). Data is being collected anyway.

The problem I have is with conversion data, it is not being collected.
There is code on the 'Thank You' page but following a successful order, the user is no longer directed to that page.
Before I start delving into it and either setting up the redirect or pasting the conversion capture code onto another page, I thought I'd check if this was still the current method of tracking conversions?

I have heard of Google Tag Manager, is this what I need to set up now, rather than trying to fix an outdated method?

    Thanks in advance

I know we had an issue at work with tracking on a WP/WOO site due to the old developer messing up the tracking and we used GTM, and it would really only take about 2 hours max.

I would add the goal as an action on the purchase button as opposed to the Tank you page URL. That is just my preference as it is easier than a URL and you won't be changing your Purchase button any time soon.

Lol GA/ tracking is some place to get lost, isn't it. one answer sparks about 50 questions!

    Thanks for the reply.
Would you suggest setting up GTM to track eCommerce conversions only and leave the GA code to do the general analytics work it's currently doing on all pages?

I ask because, when setting up GTM, I get a code snippet to paste on all pages.
If it's a better solution to do everything via GTM, that's what I'll do but don't want to unnecessarily paste GTM code on every page of both sites.

I would love a second opinion on this, and I have done a decent amount of Tag Manager work, but GTM +GA management is fastly becoming a full-time role due to the complexity.

So you set up GTM on the site once and that will cover the full site, but the tags that you add will be specific to the page. I would roll in GA into your GTM and set up Enhanced ecommerce on GA ot manage your ecommerce reporting.

Let me know if that makes sense!
