    Hi Folks

I just thought I'd ask the question on behalf of a collegue here at work who wants to get something similar to a VW polo 1.6 L diesel, has to be an automatic...Also has to be 2015 or better/...

Is there anyting out there on the market which fits that bill.

He only wants it for about 2 years as they will change after that, his wife will be getting it.

    Thanks folks

    Any advice welcome...

Can you kinda cover the requirements in terms of how much driving the car will be doing, type of journeys etc.

Sure, he's coming from wicklow to dublin airport or thereabouts each day. There are some evenings he's to come into town to drop off his wife too so,

km wise its about nearly 1100 to 1200 km a week! Mostly motorway travel

He wants to do 1100 to 1200 km per week in a Polo? God rest his soul.

Seriously, he should be considering a bigger more comfortable car for that weekly mileage. Small cars like the Polo are designed for city driving and occasional long journeys, not slugging it out on a 1200km weekly motorway commute.

I'm not one to suggest it normally, but this is absolutely prime EV territory, particularly if money was a consideration. (I would guess that it is for someone doing that milage in a Polo.)

The 75-50% savings on the M50 toll would add up to €10-15 per week, on top of the fuel saing.

If you factor in fuel savings you could maybe spend a bit more on the car itself too.

1200km per working week is about 240km per day. For an EV with a decent range to work you would still need a home charger or charger at work. Depending on public charging only along your daily route will end up wrecking your head from it potentially being out of service to waiting for someone else to finish using it, all could add more time to your commute.

That's a given yep, and I'd go one further and day you'd need a dedicated charger in work AND at home. Less of an issue in Wicklow/Airport area than the city centre I'd imagine. Not worth the hassle without a charger at both.

    Diesel would be ballpark €75/week on fuel + €21 tolls. (€96 / 400pm)

EV would be ballpark €25/week + €10 tolls (€35 / €140pm) but could potentially be half that with work charging and off-peak tolls.

That's either €260 saving, or €260 which could be put toward a nicer car.

There are very many obstacles to EV ownership currently, but this is one of those few situations where a cheaper EV could be a very smart buy.
