If your waiting for every command your loosing seconds. Seconds that probably are important.

If everyone just does their own thing you'll die faster.

When the captain calls for an evasive pattern it's not just for the benefit of the helmsman, it also tells the person at tactical what the ship the ship will be doing so when they're ordered to target the engines they have a better idea of what the relative positions of the ships will be.

The few instances of tactical having to be ordered to raise the shields after being fired on is just dumb.

    It can be.

Some big strong beam of phase or space bombs flying towards you. Should be automatic, pattern C or what ever.

My point being, the Captain has to absorb all the information, then think. Relay to the weapons officer(hopefully is prepared to fire). Then relay basics manoeuvres.

A lot of time in our huuuman communication method. Miliseconds for a computer to respond if 'Red alert was yelled'. Prob why 'control' was struck from the record though.

Just watching few episodes with battles.

Sometimes it seems to be though...there's a few instances of the Enterprise-D being hit by weapons/anomalies etc...and the ship going to red alert automatically.

A million years later and the Wrath of Khan battle remains Treks best IMO. I've said it before but the battles work better as submarine scuffles than pew-pew laser fights (though DS9s giant battles were undeniably epic)

If someone is at the helm they'd do that anyway.

That is kind of the captains job. If it was all automated you get into the self driving car problem. Someone, somewhere, the consequences won't affect has to think out every situation and apply what they think is the best solution even if the driver, or captain in this case, would think otherwise.

Because there would be no crew and then no show.

Pretty much all Star Trek space battles are hilarious. Space is big, yet all Star Trek battles are fought at close range, like a WW2 arial battle.

There are very few warp speed weapons in Star Trek so firing a phaser/disruptor/whatever or torpedo at a range where it would take longer to reach the target than it would for the target to jump to warp, even Picard Manoeuvre distance, means it would miss so close range is the only option.
