Hi guys... just wondering if you could help.. looking at a 132 5 series with 296km on clock - looks to be immaculate, auto and all bells etc. €10750, 3 month warranty

Just wondering if the mileage is realistically too high to be taking on and what kind of life I can expect from it if I keep it for 5 or so years prob 12km a year...

Is it too risky, would the engine etc be reasonably expected to go much further ? I would hope its motorway miles at that age and profile, I'm sure that's what oll be told anyway

    Thanks all

    I guess it's a 520d?
Has it had timing chain replacement at that age and mileage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,182 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    Am I mad in thinking that's a bizarre price for a 300k 2013 vehicle.....

    Seems mad

A 2 litre but a 518d? Which I didnt know existed until yesterday.. but seems to be fully specced and lovely colour combo..

I would be presuming there is significant wiggle room

Go back a year and get a decent lower mileage car for your 11k.

Also I'd note it's an SE not an msport.

For me it's overpriced. Or certainly I wouldn't spend that sort of money for it.

It's not well spec'd to be honest.
It's the very basic model with tiny navigation screen, halogen lights (which are awful on BMW).

    Is 11K your budget?

Yes prob the top end of it... thanks all, I'll go away and do a bit of research on spec levels going on yours ongarite

That's a crazy price. I sold a 2012 with similar mileage back in February for €5k.

I was happy with that and the buyer was happy that he'd get his money back by selling parts when it gave up the ghost.

Far too many expensive things can go wrong at that mileage.

    Max 7k value

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,972 ✭✭✭tinofapples

Isn't there a saying, something like "there's no such thing as a cheap BMW" ?

As previously advised, do yourself a favour and find something else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,530 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

overpriced, wouldnt touch one of them anyway. I would go for an a6 or merc, the chain issue is too costly to rectify , give that car another year or two and it may be a write off if the chain issue occurs..

try sell that car next week and you will be offered half of what dealer wants for it now... what car are you driving now? are you in a rush to change?

Looking on DoneDeal there aren't too many great examples at that price range.
It's the price and age of car that is falling into the wrong hands now

Thanks all, my last few cars have included a petrol s type jag and a diesel w211 merc, an alfa 159 before those, I just fancied dipping the toe in for the first beemer- I had thought the chain issue had been resolved post e60 and into f10? Unfortunately that budget is my end of the market! It would be mixed use so the diesel handier I think, I've had first hand experience of big petrol and paying at the pump !

Op are you in a rush to change ? Would you consider buying at auction, at least then you find the true value of what these cars are actually worth...

Honestly, some harsh reality, but if thats your budget, dont get that milage.

Live within your means, the repairs on that car would cost a fortune if something goes wrong, and at that milage its a roll of a dice.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but its not a smart buy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,530 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

I would not be spending that amount on that type of potentially problematic car, without having a good mechanic check them on a ramp first...

    Hi,
Just browsing again & this is the pick of the bunch for me.
Its only 2011 model but its a very high spec model.
Comfort seats with heated & cooled seats, dual zone climate control, electric folding mirrors & xenon lights.

The 'bmw timing chain' issue is probably one of the most talked about issues in the history of boards. Do your research, ask the question and see how you get on. You will of course have the BMW haters as well, after all its no Skoda!

Thanks a mil for all responses lads... I'm probably comfortable with SE as I actually prefer the stock look to the more aggressive m sport, horses for courses lads.. I'd be terrified of buying one at auction I'll admit :D just not for me too risky for me...

    Thanks again for all responses!

This one might be worth checking out, has half the mileage, lovely spec and wheels and probably get it for a very decent price given its a private sale.

Those sport seats are a million times better than the standard SE ones too. Looks well minded in the pictures anyway.

I've an E60 Msport and it's rock hard on runflats. Next one will definitely be an SE if I go for another 5 series

Looks lovely but I just couldn't live with a white car I know it seems to be the vogue thing these days...

Theres quite a selection out there but I find a lot of the nicer ones appear to be manual which is mind boggling to me who buys a manual bmw...

I've set the heart on one that's got the cream leather, auto, and anything other than black or white in colour... drove the gunmetal one I posted in naas the other day, impressed by the solid feel and road holding.. didnt love the nav button with no nav and although I think I could get by with the smaller screen my eyes have been opened to the larger nav screen harder as it is too find specced over here.. think an se is probably for me as I have wafting history and I think the m sport would be too tightly sprung for my local roads..

    Thanks again folks!!

FWIW there is a massive difference between the E60 and F10 Msports. The F10 feels much heavier but also so much more smoother.
I never liked my E60. My F10 is so much more that the E60 never was.

I did like you're thinking - I bought a 2012 520D SE a year ago. Had big mileage so I got a good deal on it. Chain had been done. The car had been very well looked after. If there's a car that you're tempted by no harm in going to meet the seller - you can tell a lot when you meet them. If the chain is done and they have the receipts, and if they have a good service history then you're at least limiting the risk. No harm chatting the garage who have been looking after the car for the seller too, and also finding out if the seller bought another BMW - usually a good sign. My car has been great - have it almost a year and a half now and it's been a joy to drive and hasn't given my any problems at all. It was a heart over head buy - but it didn't cost me a lot and I love the drive. It is my first beemer.

Music to mine ears !!!! Great advice and I'll be doing all of that, one I'm looking at had chain done... life is to short not to punt every now and again, I'll be caught eventually but jag merc and alfa worked out in spades so I owe a garage a few Bob anyway!! Happy christmas folks

    Few issues with it:
    • There is considerable wear on the drivers seat bolster on that car,
    • It has the basic nav (looks like the older version of idrive),
    • It will be the N47 engine (with the timing chain issues),
    • No mention if the recall for the ERG cooler was carried out,

I think its bonkers to go for the older variant of the F10 with that engine. Even with the BMW approved service intervals it can be up to 18k mls between servicing which will lead to issues in its latter years.

That car probably doesn't have sat nav as it wasn't standard back then and there is no mention of it in the advert by the dealer. Probably not a big deal anyway as the BMW sat nav is pretty basic anyway especially on a 2012 model compared to the likes of Google maps. I also don't see that driver's seat having excessive wear to be honest, standard SE seat bolsters all go like after a few years. What is more a giveaway of high mileage is the driver's door interior grab handle where the electric window and mirrors switches are, the light coloured trim ones tend to go black from dirty hands and start peal off from opening and closing the door. That one looks to be in good shape though:

    NmNmMzgwZDlhNTE5NzU4MzJlNDFjMzBkN2FmODIyYTJx7h9MsT-5oXhAi2yty0kkaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b18xNjYxOTMzNTl8fHwxMjAweDEyMDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

In saying all that, the mileage is very low for the year however and it's a UK import so I'd be making sure to do a comprehensive history check on the old UK plate to at least verify the mileage when it was living in Blighty.

Lads the egr recall only affected cars from 2015-2016 so no issue with the years the op is looking at.

They replaced the EGR in my wife’s 2013 under the recall. There was a first round when they said it was fine after an inspection and then a second round letter came and they did it at the last service.

Mine was replaced and is a 2014 car. Its also the B47 engine which means that it affected even the new shape 5 series (G30) at the time the recall (as well as 1,2, and 3 series) was announced as its the same engine platform.

Regards the bolster wear I have the same interior with approx 70k mls and it doesnt show that level of creasing on the drivers seat (could perhaps be down to a more amble previous owner of the car listed for sale).

What a stupid comment. So you know every road in ireland. I use sat nav all the time in dublin alone. Any incidents and it picks a faster route. Make a wrong turn, no problem it just recalculates a new route. More accurate speedo. Accurate time to destination relative to traffic.

Rarely would drive anywhere without it.

Just to update all bought myself an SE black, cream leather auto 520d 160km one owner, clean as a whistle, chain done by bmw under warranty Jan 19, 2012. Paid 9600 and was happy to pay it for the peace of mind, full folder of service receipts... whether it's worth that is obviously debatable but I'm happy ! Thanks for all advice and comments !

    Best of luck with it!
I assume you got the 2 year warranty which is a brilliant "extra" to get with the car.
My E60 had the turbo replaced under warranty at about 200,000kms.
