Anyone know if it’s possible to get temporary car insurance on a vehicle not in your name separate from your own car insurance

    I believe it's not possible.

You may be able to add it on to your own existing policy (provided it is a comparable vehicle to the one thats on cover) as a temporary additional vehicle. It would be standard enough practice for insurers to do this and they will charge a fee for same. Best bet is contact your existing insurer and see what they say.

    interested in this also.

Family member has a new car ordered which hasn't been delivered yet. Garage offered pittance on a trade in but advised they'd provide a temporary car should they manage to sell it privately before the delivery of the new one. Car now sold but when family member rang insurance company to transfer the policy problems ensured as they wouldn't to it as temporary car wouldn't be in their name.

Good old Ireland has the vehicle insured rather than the driver so when the vehicle no longer exists neither does the policy. Garage apparently were somewhat surprised with the insurance predicament so are checking for a solution but anyone have any advise?

Apart from some arrangement of buying and selling the temporary car from and to the garage at pre-set prices and increasing the list of previous owners anything else that can be done. While the dealership will have open insurance I suspect it's only valid for employees so can't imagine adding the family member as a named driver is an option.

Ridiculous situation but surely it's somewhat common with available options?

Can the insurer not do a temporary substitution of insurance?

A temporary sub happens when say a car is in for repairs and the garage gives the person a car for the duration of the work.

The insurers wont do a permanent transfer onto the garage vehicle as it is not owned by the policy holder however there should be zero issue doing a temporary substitution.

Tell them to ring back the insurer / broker and request a temporary substitution.

Thanks for the suggestion, will ask them to try that in the morning.
Wonder if the insurance company refused because the vehicle the policy is for no longer exists in their name while if it was just in for extended repairs they would still own it.

Could they lease the temporary car from the garage?

    That is the likely reason

You might be abke to get a years insurance then cancel it and get a partial refund. Beware you may not get a high percentage back from insurer. They often have calculations in their favour, so you don't get much back.
