Hi, Does anybody have any tips or recommended software for keeping a 3 year old laptop (Acer Aspire Core i3) running smoothly?

I use CCleaner but I have to run it each time I turn on the laptop which is a bit of a pain. thanks

Make sure your HDD isn't full or near capacity.
Make sure windows is up to date
    Uninstall useless apps or programs

What anti virus are you using?

Try the registry cleaner on ccleaner (make sure to make the back up thing at the prompt)

Take a look at how much memory your browser is using, personally I think chrome and Firefox are at least used to be massive memory hogs with Edge and Opera being much lighter (this may have changed)

    Buy a SSD

Hi, I'm using Avast free anti-virus sw. No I don't have a SDD - just the hard drive in the laptop.

Just wondering is there any free sw for keeping your laptop running smoothly - preferably one you run every few weeks rather than each time you use the laptop.

    Thanks

any cleaner software like cc cleaner will only have a very very minor effect

seriously, go get an ssd - they are just multiples faster than HDD drives - you really have to have an ssd for the windows installation to avoid going mad these days

HDD drives just mechanically slow down over time also

they are pretty cheap - from 20 euro on amazon for a 2.5 inch sata ssd which is what you need

    will transform your experience

e.g. windows will boot up in say 20 seconds, compared to 2 mintues.

Yes, get yourself an ssd, clean install of windows 10 and just use Microsoft defender that's already built into windows as your ant-virus software. It has improved a lot over the last decade and is up there with the best of the free av software now. I found avast free brutal the last time I tried it out a couple of years ago. Constant ads and definitely slowed the machine down more than windows defender does. Even try just uninstalling avast on your current setup and it will probably make a difference. But for a real increase in performance an ssd drive is needed.

    Current good deal: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-A400-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B01N6JQS8C
