    Hi,

Anyone any experience of the G30 530i engine?

I’m looking to change the car shortly (bringing a 5 series touring in from the UK). I usually drive diesel but was thinking of petrol and I’ve no expertise of the 530i engine.

I don’t really do the miles anymore for diesel. Probably only 15,000km per year. But I do like torque of diesels and that low down power.
    Any thoughts??

    You've heard of brexit.

You would want to be going over sharpish as once Brexit hits, the days of bringing over a car from the UK could be gone

Ah I think everything will work out with Brexit. 😀. But seriously cars will always be imported from the UK. Just my opinion. But I think common sense will prevail.
Anyway planning to buy a motor in the next week and have a friend bring it over.

The VRT rates change from Jan 1st irrespective of what happens with Brexit. For most cars the VRT will increase.

The 2.0 litre engine itself has been used in various models for a good few years now.

Leaving brexit aside, What car do you drive now? Wailin here moved from a 535d to a 540i and has mixed feelings about it. But he does like it. A 530i is hardly going to be disappointing but have you looked at 530e instead?

    I’ve a 2014 Audi A6 Avant 2.0tdi Sline. Great car just fancy a change.
I’d like a 530e but I want an estate and they are only just out in the touring in the last few months.

I've same car as you in saloon and going to drive a 330e tomorrow on a decent spin. Still not sure if I want to go new or used or 3 series or 5 series. But hopefully I'll be wowed by the 330e tomorrow. If not I'll stick with the Audi for a while.

Doesn't matter what sense prevails youll be paying third country rates for the car. It will murder off the UK as a way point for second hands.

Deal or no deal it will be like importing from Japan.

Time will tell. But I don’t think it will come to that.

Anyway I’m only actually asking a question on the merits of a particular car not what May or may not happen in regards Brexit.

Yes but even if they up a bit on 1st January it’s not going to be by much on modern cars. Is it?

It's a significant increase on some.

If your mileage is low, a plug in isn't really going to save you any money but you're going to have to put up with compromises in boot space, fuel tank size and handling.

Of course, if you do the right sort of driving for one (mostly urban/short distance driving) and you're not bothered by the loss of boot space or the loss in handling prowess, then they're a sound buy.

Anyone know if it will be a better option to import cars from NI as opposed to the UK?

No trade barriers for normal goods between NI and ROI but cars are always a special case. But interesting question if anyone could answer definitively.

revenue have a video about it but after watching it I still can't easily answer the question about NI imports...

No time won't tell. Even if a trade deal is signed. Cars will attract Vat and Vrt plus whatever nox charges are there plus increased shipping and paper work costs.

A deal if signed won't change above

This will prevent you from buying your chosen car as it will put it out of your budget range so it's quite appropriate that you consider that .

These are the new costs of UK IRL trade.

In the event of tariffs, if goods imported into NI are at risk of moving into the EU then tariffs will be applied. So forget about getting a car from UK to NI and then to ROI. I don't know if this prohibits them indefinitely or theres a 3 year restriction or whatever. We will know soon enough when somebody tries!

Importing a vehicle from Great Britain (GB) or Northern Ireland
From 1 January 2021 you may have to pay the following when you import a vehicle from Great Britain:

    import duties
    Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)
    VAT.

If a vehicle is being imported from Northern Ireland, no import duty will apply but you may be liable to pay:
    Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)
VAT (only in respect of new vehicles).
VAT is generally charged at 23%, and Customs Duty at between 10% and 16% on cars. An electronic customs declaration will be required in advance of the vehicle arriving in the State.

All motor vehicles imported from the UK into the State must be registered within 30 days of the date they first arrive. However, there are some exceptions. VRT is charged in most cases when a vehicle is registered in the State.

I own a g30 540i and it is a great all-rounder. The 30i is a 2-litre turbo engine, unfortunately, I am not so up to speed on reliability etc. I live in the UK and there seems to be either 520d, 530d, 540i or 530e. These are the most popular models but that doesn't mean you won't find a 530i. There are 81 currently for sale on autotrader.

What I find is that the specs can be low as a lot of the second-hand market are ex-lease and so they are not really well equipped, the well-specced cars will go fairly quickly so make sure you can jump on anything quick.
