    Hi all,
Just looking for recommendations from you knowledgeable folk on best brand oil filters & engine oil for 2019 VW Transporter Van T6 2.0L TDI - it's a standard manual model - plan to change oil myself every 10,000 miles
Plan to buy parts on line - in oil filters the options are the following -
Mahle, Ridex, Master Sport, Mann, Muller & Bosch
In engine oil the options are _
Valvoline, Mobil, Castrol, ELF & Shell.
Any particular brand I should avoid ?
    Thanks. M.

Myself I usually source oil and air filters from main dealer if nearbye. If it wasn't possible I would go Mann or Bosch.

For oil I will go by whatever is cheapest and matches the required spec. Sometimes it's cheaper to go for 5 litre batch than 4+1 litre so worth checking. All priced the same I would go with Castrol, then Mobil, then whatever.

You should keep an eye on Halfords over Christmas, each year they do specials on Castrol and their own brand oil, €15-€20 for 4 litres with most specs covered. Castrol can be €40 normally for 5w30.

I think the only oil Halfords does that meets the OPs spec is Castrol Edge
Good idea to keep an eye open but the Halfords price on Castrol is poisonous. Think I paid €22 for a 1 litre bottle when I was stuck - and that was with the trade card.

You could get the bits from VW, a genuine filter is only €14 and a 5L of VW's own brand oil which is rebranded Castrol is €39. You wouldn't get better for less in aftermarket gear.

There are different engine codes which can mean different filter. Registration required to be sure.

However, the only filters I would use are the OEMs.
For most german stuff that means
    Mahle/Knecht
    Mann
    Hengst
    UFI (in rare cases)

Personally I favour Mann but that's because I've got used to their part number. So much so that I have to write Mann numbers on other brands (even genuine BMW boxes have Mann numbers written on them)

[...] VW's own brand oil which is rebranded Castrol [...]

Are you sure it's castrol? When ms jou had her VW serviced she got VAG labelled Fuchs from dealers. And comparing to online prices, dealer was (surprisingly) cheaper, by the way.

The vw branded stuff was quantum oil. No mention of castrol but generally understood to be castrol repackaged for vw.
Fuchs maybe an official oil partner now or somethink like that.

Not sure about now (missus sold her VW 2-3 years ago) hence my question. :o

Anyway, I remember the labels stated Fuchs made it for VAG group.

I would have thought that was on the expensive side if any. The last filter being a Blueprint I bought for an Avensis was exactly €5 inc. VAT from a Motor Factors. I know were not comparing like with like here but I don't ever recall paying anymore than about €7 (if that) for an oil filter for various models in the past, albeit mainly Toyota's and Honda's but Opel in there too at one stage.

Que for people to come on here and say Blueprint are rubbish, only buy from the dealer etc but I never had a problem with the likes of Blueprint in the past having used a considerable amount of their consumables over the years. I would actually pay a premium for manufacturer approved products but not if the premium is double the price or more.

Well in the scheme of anything motoring related, i dont think €14 isn't too bad i dont think, specially in terms of maintenance of a €30k vehicle still under manufacturers warranty and there is no question mark over what you are getting, the part you are getting is exactly what it left the factory with.

I've often used Blueprint filters on my own cars over the years and for any semi junker I was driving they've been more than enough but i have often heard people say they are junk. I've never looked into it personally but you do see youtubers etc cutting open various spurious filters vs OE filters and it does appear as a general rule that cheaper filters have less filtration material in them. Maybe less filtration material isn't a big deal though, if you have anything big that needs filtering you probably have bigger issues on your hands anyway :)

With a bit of shopping around I was able to get K&N oil filters for as little as 12 quid each, including delivery.

Sadly it will never happen again, courtesy of brexit.
