Married and Maternity Tax Credit impact

We married in 2018 and looked for joint assessment after that. No real impact noticed. My wife went out in maternity in August 2020 and my 2021 tax credit certificate just came through .

Rather than the usual split of approx 3,300 each it's now more like 4,200 for my wife and 1,985 for me for next year.

I don't understand why its not split evenly anymore. Is my take home wage essentially going to be reduced now ?

Review your tax credits for 2021 as they have reduced from €6,600 to €6,185 in total. Maybe it is to do with the fact that your wife is still on maternity leave or maybe you owe Revenue money so they are claiming it back through a reduction in credits.

As things stand, yes your take home pay will be reduced. However, you can contact Revenue and get them to revert your tax credits back to €3,300 so your take home pay doesn't go down. It might even make more sense if you take more tax credits in 2021 if your wife will not be working.

You should also check to see how the SRCOP is split between ye.
