What's this I heard on FranceInter radio this A.M?

John Le Carré had changed nationality, and become Irish both as an emotional allegiance to Irish forebears and as a reaction to Brexit.

He was extremely anti-Brexit. Passionate believe in the European project.

Reading some of his novels again at the moment. He really was a fine writer.

A Perfect Spy is a must-read IMO, his most autobiographical novel, a gripping thriller, a brilliantly crafted book and ever so slightly philosophically evocative of a great deal of sadness and darkness (i.e. of the ‘human condition’). One of my favourite books overall, there are a few sentences that I go back to from time to time as the themes just resonate with my own life so powerfully (his depiction of profound family disfunction, having a horrible narcissist for a parent and how that fcuks you up for life, and sets you up for a lifetime of absolute inner loneliness, just as an example). So much more than a first rate thriller (which it is, of course).
