Are the resistance of new left and right shock absorbers different?

    Hi Folks,

So, I purchased a pair of front shock absorbers (KYB 333745 and KYB333746) for My Toyota Yaris from Mister-Auto and it arrived today.

However, when I tried to compress these two shock absorbers I could feel that the resistance of the left one was lighter than that of the right one.

Do you think that is normal or there is something wrong with these new shock absorbers?

Please advise if you have any ideas.

    Many thanks,

As far as I know they should be the same. Leave them standing upright for a while then retry them to see if they have evened out.

Would also check as number for left and right might be 1 digit difference.
Might they have supplied a standard and heavy duty version. petrol versus diesel.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I contacted KYB UK and they confirmed that the damping (resistance) for both left and right shock absorbers should be identical.

I will re-NCT soon and see how it goes. It the car get failed again, I would return the products to the supplier.

I am not sure if the supplier would accept the return as they are an online supplier but is a well-known one registered in Ireland. They sent me the product from France.

If it fails i wonder how could they do a warranty and fitting claim as in garage if a part fails within a year invoice sent back to supplier with price of parts labour and vat.

The difference in part numbers is just down to the fact that they are Left and Right handed......normally because they have a bracket for either/both the Droplink/Brake hose welded to the front or back of the Shock.

    Hi Folks,

So, together with one of my posts on the emission test for my re-NCT today, my car also got passed on the suspension test despite the difference in damping resistance on my new right and left shock absorbers (KYB 333745 and 333746) which I fitted in before Christmas. The suspension test reading was 3% for an imbalance between left and right (failed if above 30%).

Except for the difference in damping resistance when I pressed these new shock absorbers by hand to compare before fitting, everything is perfect. I don't feel any difference when driving the car so I reckon it should be grand, and it confirmed by the support from the NCT suspension test result today.
