Advice, buy now or wait until January?

    Hi there,

Hoping to trade in my 2011 Passat (300km+) for a reliable nice crossover type. Budget 12-14k plus the trade in value (not much, I get the judgy, sucky in face once I mention the kms lol)

    Spotted a 171 kadjar dynamique nav 1.5dci 55,000 miles for €16,850

After searching am I right in thinking this is the best value for size and space around right now?

I would love a higher spec, Is it a risk to wait until Jan in case this deal is gone?

    Thanks for reading!

    55,000 miles or km?

Does it come from dealer with warranty?
Low miles are only important if you plan on doing low mileage too, or low mileage will become high too.

Your Passat is worthless, but dealer might knock off a few quid just to do a deal.

Typically cars drop in price when the new year rolls over. A 171 is 3 years old now, 4 years in January. It will need its first NCT (put reg into NCT.ie), will seller guarantee it will pass NCT?
I would want at least 6 months warranty with NCT guarantee in writing. I would also only buy from trusted dealer.

    Does it have a hitch?

    More even, i'd say.

    Thanks for your reply.

55,000 miles with a 12 month warranty from Kearys Carstore. Should I look for lower mileage on a 2017?

I know the price may fall in Jan but equally they will offer me less for my Passat in Jan 2021?

Also, should I look at another brand or model? Qashqai maybe? I’d love 3 full seats in the back but all are out of my budget

They will give you nothing for your Passat, taking it off you will probably be hassle for them as they will have to offload it to the trade. You are better off trying to sell it yourself privately and then negotiate a discount off the price of the new car as you won't have a trade-in.

Yep, I was just being a bit conservative incase it was an S model or something

They might be better off selling it privately but any dealer would certainly pay more than nothing for a car they could easily sell for 4k+

I’m not sure if that’s a good deal but you should buy now if you think we will have a no deal Brexit as all cars are going to shoot up in price - Irish dealers won’t sell a car here for less than the cost to import that car from UK

If you wanted a higher spec I'd definitely hold out for a Signature model, the interior is a bit nicer. They come with a 5 year manufacturer warranty here but I think English ones come with 3 or 4 year manufacturer warranty depending on the year

A large or main dealer will have no interest in retailing a car at that age or mileage as they will not want to stand over it with a warranty. They will inflate the trade-in value against an inflated asking price of the car they are selling to make the deal look good. They will just pass it down the trade until it finds it's way into the hands of back street pop up dealers or supermarket car park done dealers. The only way it would be selling for 4k+ is if it got a hair cut. My guess is that they will get offered around 2.5k for it by the dealer and that will be against the full retail price of the newer car.

It’s unlikely the OP is buying from a main dealer as the car is an import so it’s very possible that the dealer might trade the Passat. They are quite a reliable car and in strong demand even with starship mileage

Make me think why not buy another Passat?

Main dealers bring in and sell used imports too but the OP mentioned Keary's Carstore so while not a main dealer they are still part of the Keary's group who have multiple brands under their belt. Even so I just cannot see them retailing a 10 year old Passat with 300k km on the clock as they would have to stick a warranty on it.

The point I'm really trying to make is that whatever true figure the dealer gives him for his Passat it won't be as much as selling privately. Obviously selling privately involves more work when your dealing with what's your last price merchants and no shows however. But as you said, there should be plenty of demand on the likes of donedeal.

I missed the reference to Kearys and agree they won't retail the Passat and will likely offer buttons for it- but other dealers selling used imported Renaults might bid near to what you might get selling private with a tonne less hassle

    Thanks for all your thoughts.

They have offered 2.5k for mine. Looks like I’m going to deal with them as I don’t want to go down the private sale route. The boot won’t close properly and I don’t have the time to give to the private sale process.

So now I must see what I can get within my budget. They have a gorgeous superb estate but it’s too much of a stretch unless I take a larger loan

Just so you know in real terms you are not getting 2.5k, more like 1k but you don't have the hassle of selling

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

I decided to go for the Superb estate. Even though it’s a year older, there was no comparing the comfort and spec Vs Kadjar or Sportage.
