Side gate lock

Hello all,

I'm going to attempt knocking up a side gate in the new year. One section will be 6' and a 3' section. I'll be using box steel and timber panels or PVC ones if cheap enough. I want the locking to open from the inside out with just turning a latch and to get a key to get from outside to inside. What are my options?

Could stick a standard Yale nightlatch on it, not sure how it would weather long term though as the latch mechanism is usually internal.

Otherwise you could get a tumb turn type lock like this, fairly expensive though.

If part of the gate is only 3' though will the key locking mechanism from the front not be defeated by just turning the latch?

In my case I have a 7' side gate but wanted both sides to only open by key to prevent anyone jumping the gate/wall and opening the gate from the inside. Bought this lock over a year ago and fairly happy with it, it's stood the test of time well and no corrosion. Only additional improvement would be security screws instead of the standard bolts provided but if anyone goes to that bother they're getting in the back regardless.

Good points. I suppose the latch option leaves it vulnerable. The Screwfix lock looks like it's a good option.
