G Shock guidance

Hi looking for a bit of advice on purchasing a G Shock for my eldest son. Tis a minefield.

The lad is in his 30s and him and the family are mad into outdoor persuits. Climbing hiking canoeing etc. He also does a lot of caving. (Good legibility a must re watch)

The obvious choice for a watch would be a G Shock.
I know the likes of a mud master would be ideal but my budget wouldn't stretch. 100euro tops.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

In the sub €100 range I'd be going for a classic G Shock square with solar and multiband 6. Not a huge watch, wears well on most wrists, no worry about batteries etc if you're out hiking/camping and practically bulletproof for most activities. GW-M5610-1ER Would be ideal, £79 on Amazon right now.

Yeah exactly the same module. Aesthetically I prefer the neg display too, however after owning a negative casio, the outdoor legibility leaves a ton to be desired.

See if you can get that watch with the Combi Bracelet it's one the most comfortable bracelets I have ever worn plus its built to last.

If the Mudmaster is what he likes, then i'd look at the GA-900 series (launched this year) which can be had for under €100 or slightly over depending on store and colour option.



It's a big, chunky ana-digi model with wide strap and corner-screws - an aesthetic quite similar to the Mudmaster.

New GBX-100 could be a good option if legibility is a priority. Have MIPS display which is much better than the old LCD.

Plenty of cheaper G Shocks but I'd try and set a Solar radio controlled one.

Most G shocks even the reverse display are fairly legible when using the built in lights but for caving would something with good lume be better? So you don't need a free hand to press the button.Some G shocks are lumed but pretty poor will only last minutes before fading on the other hand a Seiko diver will glow all night, Seiko Solar or an SKX would be a good option but closer €200 to 300 plus. Some of the Citizen dive watches would be still pretty decent lume wise.

That's a good price, and a good model, it is usually around €200. It's coming from outside Europe but that should be the all-in price, search boards.ie for E-global for opinions and experience.

The GW-M5610 would be my pick (bit biased as I have one).

Classic design, solar charging and radio controlled time setting. I set my other watches to it.

I'd suggest the GW-B5600BC-1BER. Has solar and multiband, completely black in colour and is one of their more subdued designs.

Would never have been a G-Shock guy before but I can safely say it's one of the best watch purchases I've ever made. I'm even wearing it as I write this!

One thing I would caution about the "classic square" type model (DW5600, GW-M5610 etc) is that they're quite compact, not what everyone wants or expects from a G-Shock.

I like them a lot personally, with the amount of recommendations clearly a lot of forum members do also. But I know people who have ordered one online and been disappointed/underwhelmed with the presence. They had this image in their mind of G-Shock being a big knobbly watch with inch-wide strap. That's the case with most models but not the classic squares. So if someone is asking for a G-Shock as a gift i'd try to find more about their preferences and expectations.

Wow, thank you everyone. I've clicked all your links and checked on a few other sites.
My son has the arms of a bodybuilder and hands like shovels therefore the big g shock would be fine for him.

I like the look of the Casio G-Shock Men's Watch GD-350-1BER. Good light and a few bells and whistles. Solar and multi bands would have been good but at this price compromise is the way.

Following on from the various guidance on here. I checked a good few reviews on YouTube for various models and eventually pulled the trigger on the GD 350 1BER.
Bought from Amazon.

Same model Hoodwinkee is charging $180 for because it's a different colour and some singer that likes watches picked the colours!

Well the GD 350 1BER went down a storm. When I saw it in the box it looked enormous. However on his wrist it looked in superb proportion. He was delighted.

To be honest I was quite envious. Haha.

As an aside Christmas brought me a watch box and a roll of tools for working with Watches. Or in my case taking old watches to pieces and failing to put them back together. (I'm an expert at that type of thing)

I have the GD350-1C. Same thing just different display. Wanted one that didn't have the negative display and did have vibration alert. We have a stupid clocking system at work and I wanted something discrete. (sound wise) as I never notice my phone vibrating. Worked well.

Despite the large size it's a really comfy watch and strap. I think because of the strap wings.

Obviously working from home don't need it for clocking anymore. I've switched to a smart watch but will still use the GD350-1C when I don't want to wear the Smart Watch.
