building basement

    Hi, Me and the wife were wondering if building a basement is something doable? We have purchased a newly built home but would love to add a basement. I suppose it is not possible?

    Technically it's possible but the cost would almost be as much as knocking the house and rebuilding from scratch with a basement. So in reality, no it's not possible.

    Piece in the Irish Times from Dec 2015 suggests a guide figure of €5,000 per sq m.

    Adding a modest 12% for inflation since then, a 50 sq m basement might be knocking on the door of €300k.

    Depending where you live, it might be cheaper to buy the house next door and knock through.
