VRT on new import

    Hi,

I've just purchased a new car from the North. I've set up a VRT appointment (NCT) but the next available date in any of the Dublin based NCT centres is 8th Jan.

Does anybody know when the new VRT pricing comes into play - is it on 1st January?

Does anybody know if because the car was purchased in 2020 then the 2020 VRT will apply?

I've asked this question directly to revenue and it's still in progress after almost 2 weeks, so I'm none the wiser.

Would love to hear if anybody else is in the same situation around importing a car and having to wait until next year for an NCT.

    Thanks

The new VRT pricing comes into effect on 1st January. As far as I understand, the 2021 rates will apply for you. It depends on when you present the car, not when you imported it.

There was another thread on this here recently - https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2058113786

Seems to be a few people affected by this due to a backlog with VRT appointments and possibly everyone rushing to import before Brexit.

it would seem to me that an appeal might well succeed. It surely isn't just to charge more tax due to the unavailability of inspection dates.

Minor point, the date of purchase doesn't matter, it's the date of import, so make sure you collect it before 2021 if you haven't yet

Being English living here for 22yrs buy all my cars out of the UK. Purchased 3 in last 4 months for relations. Decided I want a new van in 2021. Deal in NI so wanted to be sure I wouldn't get stung on VRT etc after Brexit. After some searching found a Revenue site that gave some info but also an email address to send questions to about this & get answers that are not readily out there yet for some reason.
It is messy for for UK registered cars. Basically cars purchased from the UK after 11pm 31/12/20 you will pay 10% Customs tax on the UK price, 21% VAT, €100 for declaration cert. Then the new VRT rates based on the newer version of C02,WTLP or something, be wary of this!! The actual C02 will look good It is a EU thing from 2018 I believe
A Van new, AFAIK buying will be the same as previously, no vat if registered for it & importantly 1st registered in NI VRT €200
Cars in NI on UK plates prior to the above date will just be charged VRT, so if I was to buy a car in March on a UK plate & the dealer had it on their books by 31/12 then only VRT, but if the car landed after that date to the dealer despite it being sold in the North you will be liable for the full shebang
Emailed Revenue 3 or 4 times, they don't like giving simple answers to simple questions. Waiting for clarity on someone owning a UK reg in NI then sells it later or UK car put on NI plates how will Revenue know it originated from UK?
As long as you VRT the vehicle within a reasonable time scale ,roughly 30 days within purchase you will be ok . Was down in Dec at my local VRT & he was saying dealers had been block booking, & generally weren't fining people if they couldn't get a date within the 30 days

Hope this helps some of you

    Pete

New VRT rates will be applicable from Jan 1.

    You're VRT will be bigger.

The brexit messing will not affect you as car in the country before Jan 1.

    Lastly.
I assume the car is over 6 months old or has over 6000 km.
If not you must pay VAT
