I don't know what's wrong with me. I used to be all for understatements, modesty and subtle quality. But recently I seem to like more bling. Bright coloured dials instead of black. Polished links instead of brushed. Mesh bracelets. An orange Seiko or better a Doxa. A white Rolex. Or even turquoise. And I was very much taken in by the extravagance of a stingray strap like when I came across this:

I guess you probably like a black Rolex submariner? And you drive a BMW 520d?

Beware though if this can happen to me, it can happen to anyone! :pac:

I drive a 2003 Toyota Tacoma with a dented in front bumper and right now I'm wearing an Archimede Pilot 42 with an ETA 6498 hand wind, small second hand at 6:00.

I appreciate your words of warning though.

Be nice, or I'll rescind your 'Miss Congeniality' award. The one-owner '03 Tacoma, by the way, is a vintage classic, especially with the front bumper dented in mod. I'm waiting for my 20-year plaque in 2023.

Yep getting on in years, because my first thought was:

Granted the late 70's reruns but still... :D

Haha! That's what I thought too when I first came across a stingray strap online. Don't know how I turned around on it so quickly. I must have one now!

@unkel - what's that watch? Is it an homage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,294 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I'm a fan of Rayskin and sharkskin straps and may well order a custom one for my IWC whenever I finally lay hands on one ;)

    But...
Even tho I know you are very much a blue guy!
    That's a lotta blue :P

Is the strap rough? What's the underside like?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

    Rough ain’t the word.

It's generally paired with calf leather underneath.

It's super smooth actually - rayskin is natural "ceramic" - and fireproof too (how you test for genuine rayskin). So it's almost like wearing a ceramic bracelet in terms of texture when you touch the top (if it's polished rather than left "bumpy").

Rays form these balls of ceramic presumably for defence purposes under their skin. A super interesting material - my only reluctance in using this as an option for Sólás was its potential ecological impact vs salmon leather.

A very hard wearing leather too so it will last a long time - though that is dependant on the paired leather underneath too.

Gruppo Gamma. It's a microbrand based in Singapore. They make only a handful of watches a day. From the Italian name (I think it refers to an elite Italian marine corps unit) and the look of the watches I'd say there is some Panerai homage going on there. And you'd only really pair a stingray leather strap to a diver, wouldn't you?

Good specs too. ETA 2824-2 auto movement, super luminova, sapphire crystal, good quality straps

Bonus points if you can get that other strap that we were vomiting over last week. You could used one half of each strap at the same time!

Hmmm. I have to say it's definitely growing on me on the date free Rollie and the blue dialled Seamaster. I think it looks mank on the Panny though.

I think the technical term for Stingray leather is shagreen. Pretty hard-wearing stuff by all accounts but I can't warm to the colour/texture.

This isn't half-bad at all. €149 and made to your specs by Finstraps. They have a few different colours and you get to choose the edging/stitching colours and the buckle.

    Stingray strap for sale!

And no, I'm not selling mine :p

Long story, but I ended up with 2 identical blue stingray 20mm straps like the one in my picture on the Seamaster. The one for sale is brand new, unworn. Any interest PM me. Preferable collected from me in Lucan, but I guess with the current lockdown it is more realistic that I should ship it to anywhere in Ireland.

Pity it's not 22mm. I'd chance it on my Seiko turtle save the ocean, oh the irony:cool:.

I'll be driving over in my hairdresser's convertible Porsche wearing my pink shirt and a Rolex on the stingray first thing the morning after lockdown ends. Hate the long hair!
