Mazda 1.8 diesel engine query

    Hi folks,

Thought I'd post here to see if people in the know might be a able to give me a steer (sorry no pun intended).

My current car (jetta)is getting on in years so I've been looking at possible replacements. Unfortunately I'm in a minority who seems to like the smaller saloon cars as the options in the segment seem limited. One that did catch my eye was the "new" mazda 3, it's a nice car that seems to have been well received but the one thing that worries me is the engine. I know that their older diesel models were notorious for having issues but has that been resolved now or are they still problematic?

This might be just a covid distraction as there's nothing actually wrong with my current car but I am just curious if they got the issues solved. Also, if anyone has any other pros or cons I should consider I would be interested to hear them

    Thanks

I have the 2l petrol X hatchback GT Sport and it is very comfortable and well specced. I can't comment on the diesel. Happy with the fuel economy from the diesel-like engine.

Their 1.5 engine is grand apparently, never heard of a 1.8 before but I’d be very wary until it’s proven.

Mazda is fine, but not a diesel. Petrol only. They have 'form' for poor diesels.

    1.8? That's a new one!

I thought Mazda were pulling their diesel engines from Europe from next year? The 6 diesel is certainly being discontinued. They are about 2 decades late on that one...

I *think* the new engine is different from the older diesels engines. 1.5d has been fine so they can build a good diesel.

The petrol engine is great if you'd consider it.

Other small saloons worth a looks might be the Megane, Civic, A3, Tipo, Insignia/508 (big but probably in budget), Octavia or Corolla.

You're right though, small saloons are disappearing quickly.

Is that 1.5 engine not made by PSA and ford.

    NO.

It's closely related to the 1.5petrol engine made by Mazda

    Thanks for the replies folks.

I haven't any affinity to diesels but was more considering a second hand one. In that sphere you have to take what's on offer so just wanted to know if they were ok to consider (seems the jury is still out)

I do really appreciate the advice though folks. Thanks

The new Toyota Corolla Saloon isn't a bad yoke. And the engine will go for ever ...

So apparently there was a new 1.8 Skyactiv D engine brought out in 2019.

149 sold last year and 212 this year.

Most of them were the 3, but it’s also in the CX3 and the newer CX30

So this is the same engine as the 1.5 only bigger capacity.

No clue. They’ve called them Skyactiv for years. Even the 2.0 and 2.2 timebombs
