    Hello, newbie here!

I am planning to buy an e90 320d pre-LCI M sport or LCI M sport from the UK. Recently learned that I will need to pay VRT when registering the vehicle so I looked up for an approximate calculation but probably I am not doing something right because I get from 3000 to 5000 VRT estimate which is outrageous car will be around 2500... How much will the VRT be for these kind of cars?

    Thank you!

The nox charge on top of the VRT will probably make this unworkable

    Buy one here.

Look up timing chain issues too.

    I brought in a 2014 A4 Avant Ultra in Nov 19 for €1900 VRT .
This year using the exact same car details . VRT and NOX is equalling roughly €5000. The nox is €2500 and this is for an ADBLUE equipped A4 . The vrt has gone up on this car because the value of this car in ireland has gone up because nox tax has made 2nd hand diesels more expensive in Ireland. When all these imports stop I wonder where revenue will recoup the lost income .
Imorting 2nd hand diesels into Ireland isnt worth it now and in 2021 importing any car from the uk will probably in most cases not be financially worth it. .

OP. Sounds about correct with NOX.

    VRT goes up in January.

No idea if there'll be a Brexit deal yet so there could also be import duties.

    Look here

Deal or no deal there will be VAT charges due in January for UK imports.

Thanks for your responses! I am looking for one here as well but can't find a lot from this model. These are the sites I am looking: donedeal, carzone + FB Marketplace but still no variety at all. Maybe my budget is too low (4000 euro max) but I would settle for a pre-LCI M sport or LCI non M sport. Any suggestions on places/websites on where to look for a car?

    There's a 2010 polo for 6000 in a concurrent thread.

Think you need a bigger budget...

Forget about importing one, it doesn't matter what you pay for one in another country, VRT is based on what Revenue think it's worth over here, not in the UK. These engines are also pre Euro6 so the Nox rating on them is high which will make them too expensive to import. There are loads of these cars out there for sale here, there are however alot of tired old dogs and/or money bits for sale. M Sports will always fetch a bit more money as they are more desirable. What criteria are you using in your search OP?

I am looking for a post 2008 M sport pre-LCI or LCI non M sport 320D, 184 or 177bhp engine. That's about it regarding search criterias. I have a friend who can fetch a decent one of these in the UK for around 2000 pounds on an action. He himself is driving one and it is mint. However here for 4000 stones it looks like it will be a challenge which is crazy...

Forget about what one costs in the UK as you cannot import one here for that money. The LCI appeared in 2009 and decent tidy M Sport that don't have interstellar mileage on them still fetch decent money. I think you need to reassess your budget or look at something else.

Yep, looks that way. Thanks y'all for your inputs!

Nox on that 320d is around 3700 alone.

And you'll do well to get a decent pre LCi M Sport let alone LCi here for €2500 tbh.

Get a 2007 one at that budget, at least you won't have the chain issue to worry about...

Tax would be around 700 tho. I don't prefer diesels tbh, my last car was turbo petrol, but taxes here in Ireland are bonkers for a decent petrol car..

320d is the best that will fit my budget and will not brake the bank. That is if timing chain has been properly and timely addressed. Other than that they are solid cars with good looks and drive good.

You wouldn't go for an a4 or a6 turbo petrol ? 636 motor tax for an 06 or 07 afaik....

Yeah, 636 for 1.8t or 2.0t doesn't makes sence for me.. I was considering Golf 5 GTI but my last car was FBO Leon FR 1M 230bhp(not in Ireland) so it would be really close however Golf is more expensive and not worth it imho. Would give a chance to the diesel, maybe it will serve me good. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think your focusing too much on the price of motor tax and missing that you will pay more for a car here on the cheaper tax system even at that age.

You know not everything BMW related has to be about the timing chain.

In fairness it is a big consideration as these cars get older. Repairs costing more than cars are worth. And even In the newer BM's it's still an issue. Brother in laws 2014 X5 2.0D 4x4 had a rattly chain a couple of weeks ago . 2k bill to change it.

Having owned a F10 520d it would be my primary concern when buying a secondhand diesel BMW.

Even if you get no rattle or don't end up doing the chain it's constantly in the back of your mind and makes the car a dog to sell after.

I would suggest if that the OP is looking at the cheapest examples of a particular spec and year, then the timing chain is a huge factor to be aware of, and would cost a fair chunk of his purchase price to put right.

Likewise it was the main criteria when I was looking for mine. The other e90 we have had to get done recently as well due to rattle.

Timing chain is defenetely a consideration. Apart from that are there any other weak pounts on an e90 N47 engine and the platform in general?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The ABS/DTC module can be faulty on them, it usually lights up the dashboard like a Christmas tree with multiple warnings/errors. The heater resister known as a hedgehog resister can give trouble, usually results in the blower making a weird sound. If it's a rare one with an idrive screen then make sure it's fully working as they were troublesome back then, if it randomly reboots or has an non responsive blank screen then your looking at replacing the entire system which ain't cheap.

Had one myself for about 3 years and overall they are a great car if you can find a cared for one, thing is you will tend to pay handsomely for a good one in M Sport.

If it has zenons check the washers are working.
Mine constantly blew off the covers. Some lads pull the fuse for the winter.

    Had a 330d e90 for 3.5 years.
Only issue I had with it in that time.

Oh apart from an alloy getting stuck on it.

EGR's and glow plug modules do give a bit of trouble on them and swirl flaps have being know to break on them as well though nowhere as common as the older m47. EGR and flaps easily preventable by mapping out and removal.

And what Bazz said as well about the traction control light appearing while driving along. Can be a pain in the hole but easily traced and fixed by a mechanic. Touch wood mines being ok but the other one does it time to time.

Mine are shocking, they don't even hit the lights unless your doing a certain speed and one of them sometimes doing go back into the bumper.

Yeah, I will be very lucky to find a decent m sport but deals do come up and I am not in a hurry. I like the look of the regular LCI as well. Will research a bit more about the various modules and things that go bad. Used to do myself some of the common repairs and mods for my old one, hated the way most mechanics do their job, I always had to fix something in the end.. Thanks lads for your help, will be coming back if I have more questions. Cheers!
