Is a broken Macbook worth anything

My early 2015 13" Macbook Pro (Retina, i7, 16gb, 512 SSD, 288 battery cycles), is giving some trouble. Works perfectly in all scenarios except when you play a video e.g. in VLC player or via web browser etc... All videos cause it to crash (unless you use Chrome and disable hardware acceleration, in which case its perfect).

Doesnt seem to matter what version of MacOS I use.

Machine is perfect otherwise, screen, chassis, charger etc... mark free.

Potentially fixable, but I am pretty tired of trying at this stage.

I am not sure where the problem is, but figuring it must be worth something for parts since I see some folks selling broken ones (very badly broken ones) all the time. Any advice on this ? Split the bits on ebay.. sell as a whole... etc.. ?

Sell it to somewhere like Cex?

with the positive reception of the new chips the value will be falling on the older models I suppose

I wish I could. Fully working its nearly 700 in store credit. And honestly it would probably pass as fully working.. sails through the diagnostic tests etc.. but I wouldnt do it. I was looking at trying a replacement logic board. Expensive experiment tho.

    fair enough.

you're an honest soul - they may have some comeback clause on you in any case

I'm sure that plenty of unscrupulous types have sold these on ebay

seems to be hard to pin down what exactly causes the fault and expensive to go about getting a logic board etc

could try this? free so worth a look. seems safe from the comments.

Could your Macbook be overheating? There are programs that can show you what temperatures are detected inside. If it is overheating, the problem may be fixed by cleaning fans and replacing the thermal paste.

    Thanks for this.

A rather unattractive fix which seems to be working really well is that I have installed Windows 10 on it.

And now it works flawlessly it seems.

Thats a turn up for the books.

Shame Windows 10 gobbles down the battery about 3 times faster

playing a video seems to be the case as outlined by the OP and that would not cause overheating
