My mother getting a new car in 211 she tells me today and wants my help... Looking at cars along the lines of fiesta, micra, kia and hyundai whatever their models are, polo, ibiza, 208...you get the picture.

Absolutely not brand sensitive and will be more or less base models 1.0 to 1.2 whatever they come in. Only things I'd like her to have is Bluetooth for her phone which she doesn't have in her old car now, and screen mirroring for android auto just for Google maps as she is hopeless with directions. Plenty of these cars to my surprise have android auto but very few have their own sat navs, probably best off really.

What she will want though is a good price. What deals are out there at the moment, combinations of scrappage (hyundai have something called an eco upgrade which is like an enhanced trade in/scrappage scheme), seat have 0% finance, the Koreans have good base prices but still many more to look at.

What would you recommend, woman in her mid 60s with a good few years left on the road.

Will she be keeping the car long term?

Good differentiator would be warranty if she’s not bothered by other things.
Kia and Ford do long warranties but with mileage limits (particularly small on Ford)
Hyundai do 5 years unlimited, Kia is 7 years / 150k.

Nissan will probably be throwing lots of discount at the Micra now that the shine has gone off them.

Have a look at the Dacia Sandero too.

Good call but she'd never go for it. Too expensive as well. Looking at the 20k price range the Honda is 30+

Suzuki should be worth looking at too.
Swift and Ignis come with a good list of kit even for the basic variants.
The brand is known for reliable cars ..not sure about any specific deals though.

Brother recently (8 weeks ago) got a good deal on a Hyundai i20. He went with base model but there was some decent extras on it

There is a new Dacia Sandero on the way and it looks really good inside and out for the price. Much better than the current model.
There is also a new Hyundai i20 on the way might be the reason the above poster brother got a good deal on the current model.
The Renault Clio and Captur are both really good cars and both not long out about a year out now maybe 2.
The Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross are good as well.
Seat Ibiza is a good car very stylish.
Mazda 2 although its getting long in the tooth now.
The Opel Corsa is very new but quite boring and not that spacious. It us based on the 208 because PSA own Opel now.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Not price or deal based at all but the new Peugeot 208s are a gorgeous little car. Look deadly in the yellow or blue but they're just well proportioned a d work well in any colour tbh.

Just on the good deals aspect, I think a few brands are doing 0% HP finance at the moment not PCP, I know Nissan, Kia, and maybe some Fords...there are all different deals,so you need to check the small print, 0% finance on HP over 3 years, with no balloon payment at the end, but bear in mind because its a HP deal, she wont actually own the car until the 3 years are up.

PS.. I also see Kia are giving a €500 voucher for Supervalue if you book before end of December.

I bought one of those myself at the weekend. Deadly little car, it's like a go cart, responds instantly to everything you want it to do. Comfy inside. Compact but smart looking imo.

True they are high quality, my daughter has one although im not convinced that the hybrid is any more economical than the manual petrol version.. But they are neat little car..

Yaris hybrid is €24200 including metallic and delivery. I’m not sure that you’d get €4200 off?

Usually around €1500 discount on something in that price range.

Thanks lads I've made a few enquiries. Finding that about 2000 is standard enough discount off list price. Possibly edging towards seat ibiza se+ at the moment which is coming in at 19500 on 0% finance. 3000 deposit, about 240 a month for 36 months and in around 8k gfmv if we go down pcp route.
I'm sure I'll get very similar numbers from plenty of dealers. I've a few more to talk to, I personally like both the clio and 208 but I haven't got numbers on either yet.

Actually your right.. I thought it was the Hybrid i was looking at on their website.. It must have been the regular petrol engine.. But i thought that Toyota were only selling hyrids now.. I didnt realise they were still selling new ordinary manual petrol cars.. I must have got that one wrong..

I think they’re only doing the hybrid in the uk.

That 1.0 engine is comically outdated.

Micra or the new Clio would get my vote.

    What’s she trading in?

She has a 09 micra but with the straight sale discounts I am getting offered of 1500 to 2000 I think it would be madness to trade it in.
I will sell it privately for her.
I like the Clio myself personally.

Now however we have a fly in the ointment that my father wants to get involved in this as he has a big van as his daily and would like a car he can drive too. And he wants electric. Which is fine.

Possibility it will be the last car they buy as the car will get an easy life and low mileage (they are both 66 and in good health so who knows) and a VW Golf ID3 is now being talked about.

She should get €3000 Scrappage on a new Micra so I would think again about that.
But if there’s an ID3 in the picture it might be worth seeing what sort of deal you can do on a Polo as well

Id3 is a great car but software is still glitchy and 6 to 12 months off being resolved. I doubt they want the risk of new software issues at 66 years. Give it a little while.
