Tax renewal notice for car I sold to dealer

Ahhh the saga continues with this dealer.

After dragging his heels for 2 months, the cooling fan was replaced last week.

However today I got a notice for motortax renewal on my old car, which I traded in for the one I have now. This was done on Aug 21st. I checked motortax.ie and there's been no activity in terms of vehicle ownership in the last 3 months.

What kind of risk is this to me? I imagine he hasn't sold my car and if he was it would be in auction as it was an old (but functional and taxed until end of year) yoke. He said he might use it as a loaner for a while, but I've had his loaner and it was not my old car. I know dealers don't always put the vehicles in their name but surely it shouldn't still be in mine this far out?

Not sure if this is something (another thing) I should be pursuing the dealer about?

If you put the reg into the cornmarket car insurance quote thingy it’ll tell you if it was transferred, you’re outside the 3 month window so it wouldn’t show now in motortax.ie

Thanks Colm, surely I wouldn't get a notice for tax renewal today if it wasn't in my name?

It's your responsibility to transfer ownership by sending off the log book

This wasn't a private sale. Dealer does it online, filled in the form etc. Looks like it wasn't processed on his end. I do have the logbook for the new vehicle though, so he processed that part.

It’s not impossible for that to happen.

It’s also quite possible that the garage didn’t bother doing their paperwork.

Doesn't matter, you won't have to pay as no fine.

Only issue would be warden/council parking or Garda if car is parked and fine could be done.

If you have proof of sale keep it safe.

I imagine dealer isn't putting it into their name, when it sells they'll just transfer it to the new owners name

Thanks for this, this was the piece of info i was looking for. No idea where the car is, wasn't on the dealers lot when I was there last week, but I have the proof of sale so can produce that if needed.

Last date is from when I bought the car in 2016

It would have shown the transfer to dealer as the last date, so that’s that.

I’ve sold cars and sent off the logbook and have still gotten motor tax renewals, it happens sometimes. Thats not to say the car is definitely out of your name
