"Key not working" is obvious suspect : maybe there's a short in the ign switch causing the starter motor to operate or damage to ign sw wiring.

Check condition of wiring. Try flushing the ign switch to clean it; graphite-based lube recommended.
Other posibilities: starter button stuck or shorting, starter solenoid shorting.

If you disconnect the starter motor you can check the ign sw and some other things with the battery connected.
This might be easier to do this at the solenoid switch. Follow the cable from starter to solenoid switch. Insulate the connector carefully.
Then I'd check for power at the coil.
When you sort the ignition and cranking check for spark at the plug.

Does it have a carb or FI? I'd drain the fuel and use fresh. Is the air filter clean?
On my Suz moto there's another relay in the ignition circuit but I doubt it's that one.
