Sure that's nothing four year old child was "awarded" 40k for being left behind on a LUAS platform when mother failed to look after her child.

While I usually shake my head at some of these payouts in this case it should be more!

First they came for the socialists...

Judge John O’Connor was told in the Circuit Civil Court that the then 12-year-olds, including twin sisters, had been stopped in the store in August 2018 and told they had been recorded on video robbing in the shop.

The security guard had said to them: “I have you on video….you are robbing. I want to search your bags.” Counsel said the girls had been extremely upset and embarrassed and he was recommending that the court accept the settlement offers.

    That's pretty idiotic tbf

If that's the case then everyone here who grew up in the 80s is due a legacy payment

OP, we should be getting compensation for having to go and find the article being discussed ourselves.

It's a sad reflection on us that compo culture is so rife. Yet an eight year old with cancer has to fund raise for a prostethic leg.

Well its a bit harder to get people worked up if they can read the article for themselves and see what the actual circumstances were

Some of these awards are unbelievable, ridiculous awards for stupid people.
Not this case though, those girls deserve the money and the person who searched them should have known better.

Hold the front page! Irish judge makes "interesting" decisions shocker!! In other news: Water is wet.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Why?

Defamation of character. Might not effect a 12 year old the same way it effects an older person.

First they came for the socialists...

It would take at least a year or more for someone on minimum wage to save 5k. An apology and a small gift card would've done. Insurance costs are killing small businesses.

Accusing anyone of theft without 100% proof is always a big no-no in retail.
The security guard/team ****ed up there big time.

They should count themselves lucky there weren't "neighbours" shopping there at the time that saw it also and their character is ruined on the street/town/estate now.

I don’t see a problem. The award is on the low side if anything . He actually accused three innocent children of robbing.

He didn’t simply just ask to check anything instead he accused them of stealing...he accused them of a crime.

If security came up to me and asked me to show them the bag I was carrying, in a polite, respectful and courteous manner, I’d probably show them...

If they were getting aggressive and straight out accused me of taking something I’d be showing them SFA... I’d just walk away... if they would get physical to deny me being able to do that , I’d be introducing my fist into their cerebellum...

    Absolutely not.
Anyone working in security knows this is completely wrong and a security company who has a staff member doing something like this knows it is in the wrong.
Insurance may be killing a lot of business but it's not killing security.
Do you think security staff should be allowed do whatever they want? Accuse people whether they have evidence of not?

What sort of ****ing idiot security guard goes through a child's bag? Luckily the payout will be offset by him getting his marching orders hopefully.....

How on earth was the the fault of Luas?? Surely the mother should have been holding onto her 4 year old kids hand.

Why? I was never accused of robbing even when I was actually robbing.

I got locked in the storeroom of a shop for half an hour when I was a kid while the owner went through the CCTV to see if I had paid for a can of coke. I had. Instead of a payout I got kicked out of the shop and told never to come back because the cnut couldn't bring himself to apologise.

The legal profession has an awful lot to answer for in this culture.
