    Hi,

I know there are only 2 channels broadcasting in HD but is there a limitation to Saorview that would prevent it broadcasting in 4k? Or would a 4k channel nearly occupy the bandwidth of a MUX?
Just something that popped into my head.

Saorview doesn't even broadcast in full HD so no chance of UHD appearing.

UHD at a minimum requires a newer transmission and video compression standard than they currently use, a move to DVB-T2/HEVC.

The current standard gives a mux capacity of about 24 Mbps. A single UHD channel currently requires in the region of 10-13 Mbps. A DVB-T2/HEVC mux has about 40 Mbps capacity.

The last time I posted about this back in 2019 France were carrying out a consultation on the future of DTT there including plans to launch a UHD mux for their main national channels in the next couple of years in time for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Any future change of standard here is likely towards the end of the decade following the outcome of the ITU WRC-23 where it is likely further terrestrial broadcasting spectrum will be reassigned to mobile services post 2030, thus requiring existing services to fit into a smaller slice of spectrum. This may require a move to a more efficient transmission and video compression standard

Nevermind HD, thanks to a legal challenge VirginMedia only pay for they bandwidth they use on Saorview so no incentive to show proper SD.

They can sell you higher resolution on cable which is a different incentive. At this stage I watch their content on FreeSat instead of VirginMedia. (advertisers please note)

Meanwhile in Italy any Free To View satellite channel worth watching will soon be in HD only. Translation

Tiusat is part of https://freetva.tv/ so maybe FreeSat might get an upgrade too, leaving us further behind.

SaorSat changed transponder so a lot less spare bandwidth than before, which means it won't be going full HD anytime soon.
