We are laying engineered floor on the first and second floor. Any ideas to make the transition expansion gap from the engineered floor to the bottom of the stair banister smooth?

At the moment there’s a 1cm gap. Photo is not best quality

You can buy a scotia (moulding) to cover the gap. Generally comes in 2.4m lengths.

Cork expansion strips can be got to fill the gap glued down with silicone .
Make sure its a neat parallel gap for the Cork strip to slot in to

Whatever you put there, quadrant, scotia or flat bead,
don't be tempted to fix it to the floor, as that would close up the expansion gap.

You can get a flat (8mm) strip of wood 30mm wide to glue in place. A regular white oak strip would probably match your floor colour. Personally I prefer solid wood strips but it can easier to find a laminated one in any DIY store.
