Would you save a random woman being attacked?

    This is something interesting, I say a YouTube video that was a social experiment of a man beating a woman and then a woman beating a man. Unsurprisingly, men and women in the street intervened way more to the former situation.

    But I'm wondering, let's assume that it's not a domestic violence situation and a woman is getting jumped/mugged by three or four guys late at night in Dublin near a bus stop. Would you save her or run away.

    I'd have to abscond from the scene as fast as possible. I'm a scrawny 5ft 5in, 60kg guy, I'd have no chance with these scumbags. And besides, I don't care about a random woman.

    Do you care enough to call the Gaurds, or just don’t care about random women?

    I would but in my experience, the Guards don't arrive at the scene of such accidents fast enough. My German piano teacher said he witnessed an assault near his house and called the Ambulance and was waiting for an hour.

    While I do agree there's an inherent social stigma that makes people want to "white knight" and defend a woman in this circumstance more than a man, it also can't be avoided that there is also the desire to defend someone from risk, or to otherwise address an apparent imbalance.

    Someone might also intervene if they saw;

    - A bigger child attacking a small child (where you don't know either of them)
    - A bigger dog attacking a small dog
    - A full grown person attacking a person with dwarfism.

    But would be less likely to intervene in;

    - A smaller child attacking a bigger child
    - A small dog attacking a bigger dog
    - A person with dwarfism attacking a full grown person

    Because in the latter scenarios, the victim is perceived as being in less danger of injury, or perfectly capable of repelling the attack alone.

    And this is how it is partially seen when a woman attacks a man; I don't need to intervene because he's not in any real danger. However wrong that may be.

    Thankfully I've never had to intervene and I would always have been wary of doing so; you're more likely to get yourself attacked by both parties even if you're defending the woman.

    What I would try to do instead is appeal to them both to stop, as if they are having a fight as opposed to treating it as an "attack". If you don't go white knighting in and throwing fists, but instead be a non-aggressive barrier, you're less likely to get battered.

    I've done this on a night out, I intervened in a domestic between a couple only to be to by his missus to fcuk off and mind my own business, he could have levelled her after for all I know but she didn't want my help so I said fair enough and carried on my merry way, depending on the situation you'd want to be careful, but if it was a random attack by some scum bag I'd like to think I'd step in

    I had a similar experience, she told me to mind my own business when I tried to pull him away, I'm a big guy but he was bigger I wasn't sure what my next move was going to be then I felt a hand on my shoulder, thankfully it was one of several Gardai who arrived on the scene. She then turned on the Gardai when they had the f**ker pinned to a wall.

    5'6'' or 6'5'' coming out on top versus 3/4 is fantasy stuff. Anyway it's usually about the size of the fight in the dog than the size of the dog in the fight that matters. Either way one person isn't going to have the firepower to handle the numbers.

    Lets make it a one on one encounter. A bit of pushing, shoving and bravado ain't going to cut it. No point in entering a situation half cocked, the other person is already rev'd up. There will be no normal escalation. One would need to go in hot following the three F's, First, Fast and Furious. There are two outcomes then, you survive or you don't. Ya don't win in these situations. Lets say yer victim is now on the ground with a cracked skull. Well violence doesn't happen in a bubble, depending on how it plays out you could be looking at time. Alternatively you end up stabbed or with a cracked skull yerself. Maybe dead, maybe life altering injuries. Personally I've a family to provide for ya gotta ask yerself are my morals worth it?

    First they came for the socialists...

    I’m no gentleman but I was attacked a few years ago and a random guy came to my rescue and punched the attacker in the face. The random guy who saved me then got in trouble for breaking the attacker’s teeth 🙄 The attacker hit me before the guy intervened but I had no bruises or anything to prove it. Such an annoying story

    Seems like the scenario described is merely an excuse to shoehorn in the "Poor me, I'm short and ugly schtick".

    The German piano teacher is a new addition though.

    Well at least you know who you are and who you aren't. You can learn from it and don't get into situations that are over your head.

    You could always do option C hide call the guards and film it for evidence.

    Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
