    Hi all,

I'm planning on buying an A-Class (year 171) or one of the new Renault Megane
Sports (year 181/191) in the New Year.

What are peoples thoughts on their comparison in terms of engine, cost of repair etc etc? Anything to look out?

I've heard a few things that the A-Class engines aren't great, but not sure what to believe!

    Thanks so much in advance.

Isn’t the engine in the A Class borrowed from Renault? Pretty sure its the same engine as the one found in the Megane

    Thanks guys.

So effecitvely it's the same engine in both cars, so they'd be sort of the same to drive and cost of repair would be relatively the same?

Or am I way off with that?!

There’s more to a car than the engine.

I would have a new Megane over a 4 year old A Class anyway.

    Get you, thanks!

Is there anything you've heard about either that would deter me off? Having a hard time picking! Haha

Having previously owned a Megane, you couldn’t pay me to own another.

Prospective Megane doesn't appear to be totally new. OP is possibly looking at a 2018 Megane vs a 2017 A-Class.

Would you still go for an '18 Megane over a '17 A-class ?

I would but I'd have to ask myself is there other cars to consider.

    Curious to know this too!

I really like the look of both cars, but a little concerned with some comments about the engine!

An Audi A3/ BMW 3 Series would be my other choices, but I believe the cost of repairs etc are quite high for both.

The A Class will be no cheaper to repair than an Audi A3 or BMW 3 Series, they are all premium brands and can be more expensive to run. Just because the A Class uses a Renault engine doesn't mean the rest of the car isn't fitted with Mercedes parts and software. If any of these things go wrong they will cost a fair bit to replace. Not sure how the OP arrived at a Renault Megane as being an alternative of any of the above cars to be honest, the Megane would be an alternative to the likes of a Golf, Corolla, Astra, Focus, etc as would running costs.
