Oil around intercooler pipes

So this evening I took the undertray off my car to get in underneath and have a look at a few components.
Admittedly I don't know much about intercoolers other than how to locate them and that they're basically a cooling mechanism for the turbo same as the radiator for the engine.

Anyway, as I was under the car I noticed oil around some metal tubing, I'm unsure what this means if it's normal or even what the metal tubing is called, so at the bottom of the intercooler there is a thick hollow rubber hose coming out of it that then connects into some metal pipe about one foot away from the intercooler, still underneath the car.

This is where I noticed oil when I rubbed it with a rag, it's not a lot, but there is oil going along this metal pipe. I followed the pipe up as it curves up into the engine bay and I noticed some more oil around it.

Anyone shed any light on this and impart some knowledge into me about what it all means? Thanks in advance

Sadly ,even the little bit that you think you know is wrong. Where do you get your knowledge from? :):)

Not in particular, but what I can tell you is that an intercooler is not for cooling the turbo.

The intercooler improves the combustion process in turbo charged engines, thus increasing the engine power effect. The main role of the intercooler is to reduce the temperature of the hot air compressed by the turbocharger, before it reaches the engine's combustion chamber.

Interesting how someone says you’re wrong but hasn’t a clue themselves!

I was being sarcastic with mr.dirty nails but I sincerely thank you for the information. I was kind of right in what I thought then, but thanks for clearing that up for me. So to answer my question, is a bit of oil sweating around the metal pipes normal or needs a closer look?

It’s perfectly normal for a small amount of oil to pass through the turbo and mix with the air,if you pull off the lowest pipe on the intercooler there might be a small cup full of oil sitting in there. My own caddy does it and there’s not a bother with it as it’s a cupful over 60-70 thousand km’s

I'll do that so, turbo seems to be in good condition the car pulls fine through all the gears and there's no sounds other than the slight whine when I'm really pushing it , thanks again for your help
