Many people have filled in for Ronan Collins lately. Why is una healy's name being mentioned?

"It was during another of those TV talent shows, Phil told one of the acts that they should ‘lose the guitar’. I wondered how he, as a pianist and a writer of wonderful hits, as well as some ordinary stuff, would have reacted to being told as a kid that he should lose the piano?”

    Lol

Una Healy is not an experienced radio host for a flagship programme like this. It would be extremely unfair if Una was to take over in preference to others that have done the hours in a variety of radio roles and have a great knowledge and appreciation of music.

Three that come to mind that should be considered (and they are probably more) are Carol Moran, Sheelagh Dempsey and Ruth Smith.

Please RTE don't go down the avenue of appointing a 'name' for the sake of it.

She seems to be well in at RTÉ

Good piece... I've said this in the Shows own thread, but I'm in my early 30's and really enjoy his show. I'd miss it if it was gone.

Not Keen on Una Healy as a replacment...

I've rarely listened to Ronan Collins

Anytime I did I liked his no bulls1t attitude to life

What has that got to do with a replacement for Ronan Collins?

Any chance they could get shot of Ryan Turdidy instead?

You mention all females? Is that a pre-requisite for replacement DJ's these days?

Michael Cahill (I'm not a fan btw), Dave Fanning and other experienced radio DJ's also have filled in for Ronan.

I turn Ronan Collins off immediately when he comes on - it's hospital radio and hasn't changed in years. Would welcome change, but definitely not someone like Una Healy.

Ronan's figures speak for themselves. Not to everyone's tastes, not for all ages, but Ronan is very popular and it's a hugely successful show.

It's radio for retired people. I get they may want to have a bit of a musical break in between Today and the News at One, but like you say it's hospital radio.

People of all ages, creeds and hues go to hospital.

No idea what you mean by "hospital" radio.

Her musical pop combo colleague, Mollie King, has a radio gig too. It seems to suit the lifestyle of former musical pop combo performers in they still have an opportunity to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. It saves them from having to do anything as mundane as working a traditional 9 to 5 job after their former career has come to an end.

    Ronan Collins is 68 + 47 days !
It's time to give some young one a chance in life - he/she will happily work for half of Ronan's annual income.
It seems that if you manage to get on RTE's payroll you can stay 'till the grim reaper comes for you.... think Larry Gogan etc.
RTE try to justify the mega bucks they pay certain presenters by claiming that if they don't pay up their so called 'stars' will be poached by other stations. What a joke.
Pat Kenny left and RTE didn't close down !

The replacement for any vacant spot is typically female. The Director General appears to have a positive discrimination policy which doesn't favour anyone unfortunate enough to have been born as a white skinned straight Irish Male.
RTE may be in the middle of an existential crisis but that doesn't matter.
Please tell me I'm being unfair.

Did John Creedon not have that slot originally when the Ronan Collins show was later in the afternoon?

I'm not retired and I listen to it although not daily. Started listening to it as a teenager.

Do retired people not have a right to have their choice of music played?

I listened to Ronan Collins off and on for years, though never on a regular basis (yes, he's the one told me John Lennon was dead).
He doesn't suffer fools and he never bothered to hide the fact that he didn't like some of the music he was playing (does anyone remember the Cows with guns which was mildly amusing once but got requested over and over until he got sick of it).
Let him carry on until he fails to get the listeners or he feels it's time.

There is not enough popular music on Radio 1.

The Ronan Collins Show is excellent entertainment.

The slot in the afternoon schedule from 3.00 pm to 4.30 should be an all music show. The current magazine type format of the Ray Darcy show does not work. There is a bit too much talk on Radio 1 and modifying the current afternoon format with more music would provide a better mix.

It's the kind of stuff you would expect to be played in a nursing home or hospital setting to keep elderly/ill people calm. Zero edge, very dated, and shouldn't be on a prime slot on the nation's main radio station.

True. I have edited my post - I was just getting across that I have nothing against her personally.

He did... Before that was it High Noon with Carrie Crowley??

Ronans slot was much better suited to 3.30 I feel. A bit of music at that time ties you over until the end of the day, magazine shows just make you sleepy!

    IMO...

Agreed on both fronts. Ronan Collins is a byword for maudlin nostalgic muck, imagine listening to his dreary song selections day after day. Particularly in the era of Covid. And then the ludicrous requests: "5 year old Paddy Reilly from Cavan loves his Big Tom". Collins belongs on a cruise ship, one way ticket to oblivion. Una Healy isn't the answer, unless RTÉ want to successfully haemorrhage more listeners.

I think someone like una healy would be more suited to Spin South West, or Beat.

I still listen to Peggy Lee occasionally

I'd be sad to see Ronan go. While much of the music he plays would not be to my taste, his easy going manner is good for the soul.

The show is only spoiled by the Duffy clown showing up to announce what won't be on today's Liveline. #washyerhands

We'll miss him when he's gone, which hopefully won't be too soon-much more so than Larry (which was a combination of him hanging on too long, which we'll understandably forgive him for, his inability to utter a spontaneous word, but much more because of his continuing presence on a wholly inappropriate platform).

A longer slot into the mid afternoon, maybe even with a musical guest or two would have worked so well for this genuine and eminently likeable campaigner.

Would have saved us a cool half a million too.

    I prefer Conan Rollins...

I've normally have Today on downstairs while I'm working upstairs, so it usually gets left on between that and the news at one. In fairness, I'm often surprised by decent tunes that I hear if I'm down - yesterday it was Creedance Clearwater Revival.

    You're 100% correct there.
Heard her recently on radio, she stated that her primary mission was to have more and more female presenters on radio/TV. She also stated that she instructed that all live programmes like Saturday / Sunday Sport etc. must have at least one female guest & presenter at all times.
She also has plans to recruit female non nationals as presenters for both radio & TV - it must be the most overstaffed broadcasting station in the world with probably the smallest viewer / listenership.
She's really proud of the high % of females currently presenting sports programmes but says ''we're not there yet''
RTE is going from one extreme to the other which is never good.
I'd say by the time she retires an adult human male will be a very rare species indeed in RTE !

Ronan’s heyday was when he was the host of Play the Game with Twink and Derek Davis.

It was a phenomenal show and the flagship of what was truly a golden era of Irish television.

Interesting that Collins says that he never promotes Spotify. Can't imagine that leads to a comfortable relationship with D'Arcy, who promotes it all the time - I've actually questioned whether he gets paid for mentioning, given the frequency of his promotion of them.

Every musician/artist get a payment every time his/her record is played on radio/TV (IMRO is the organization that represents them I think) and it's well known in the industry that the musician looks after the radio DJ in return - Same may apply to D'Arcy & Spotify etc. It's a nice little lucrative tax free side line they have going. No wonder they won't retire until they're carried out !

30 year radio professional here to let everyone know the above post is utterly wrong.

What you are describing is Payola - a criminal offence across most of the planet.

Radio people may not accept gifts or financial reward for airplay. It has occurred over the years (particularly during the early rock and roll days) but is a very rare occurrence.

You’re also presuming that radio presenters choose their own music. The vast majority do not.

I’d love to know where you got this idea from but it’s about as wrong as wrong can be.
