Sudden screen resolution issues on laptop

Hi - new here, writing on behalf of my son. He has a Windows 10 Dell laptop which he plays games like Team Fortress 2, Left for Dead etc. It's not a brilliant gaming machine but it does the job. Or at least, did. Last week, out of the blue, it started giving issues with the screen resolution.

In order to get a decent refresh rate, he likes to reduce the resolution of the game, but now when he does this, whenever the resolution is lower than 1920x1080, which is the native for his laptop, there are thick black borders around the edge, the game screen is too small for the screen. In some older games where the resolution is tiny in comparison, he can barely see anything. Before the game window stretched to fill the screen, but now it's not.

He didn't do anything during the week to cause this to change, literally just logged in one day and it was like this. Is there anything we can look at to figure out what the issue is? Thanks!
