Heavy Mirror Hanging

Hi all,

I was hoping I may be able to get some advice from you all. I have a 12kg mirror to hang on a solid wall. The fixtures on the frame to hang are as per the picture below. Given the fixtures I will need to use two screws slightly protruding from the wall.

My question is, would a raw plug scenario and screw in to the solid wall be strong enough, if so what size would you think for the job. I had considered using a drop in anchor, but I wondering if that would be overkill for the job?

If you have masking tape put a strip on the back, covering the 2 brackets. Colour in the mounting holes with a pencil.
Now remove the tape and stick it onto the wall where you want to mount the frame.
Check level and height

Is there any easy way to figure out which we have?

A variation on a solution for a smaller part where the person just photocopied the back of the part and used the page as a guide.

I suppose it's also handy for people who cannot read tapes

That's fine for plasterboard on regular stud walls, I'd rarely hang anything on a wall like that without an anchor. But if it's plasterboard on a solid wall then it would likely have a polystyrene insulation layer. Maybe the anchor would be fine with that, never tried it!

Knock on it. The sound of the knock will be hollower on a solid will with insulated plasterboard over it.

You'd need something to compare it to though...

OP either way you need to drill a hole, so drill your hole and then go get the appropriate fixings for the situation you have.

If its solid then you will hit the block/brick within an inch and you will see, if there is insulation then you will see it but also the drill will go deeper before hitting the wall.

Note you will need a masonry bit for your drill either way.

Also a stud finder or similar device to ensure you don't bump a cable.
Good diy rule of thumb pipes and cables will usually run in straight lines, so try to avoid drilling direct above or on the level of sockets, switches and radiators. Turn off the power to the sockets if you can too
