What do I need these multiplayer packs for?

Just bought the switch and LM3 for the kids (2 boy 6 & 7) - do I need to get these packs to allow them play together?

Or does it just add some extra levels etc?

It's some extra levels for the multiplayer (be that local or online) and some costumes for Luigi, they can play together without that, even in the main story (after a certain point).

It's not too long into it, they have to:
get to professor E Gadd, and get Goo-igi
