Injection sites

When doing an intramuscular injection do you go for the neck or rump?
When doing under skin (subcutaneous) I'd grab a fold of skin along ribs.

I've read that you shouldn't inject into rump as there is a chance of damaging sciatic nerve if it gets infected. The neck site is a bit difficult to get at in our crush, but its something I'm going to have to take another look at. When the vet comes down, from recollection I've seen them going for rump too - they'd always be using a clean needle and syringe though.

Whats the process you all use?

If you inject the rump you are injecting where some of the best meat comes from and there is the possibility that you may cause damage there.

If their mad... I often tump the rump 2-3 times(with a closed fist) and the last one is the injection..it seems to work well for me. If your doing it right they dont seem to be too bothered.

Thats what we do - never really considered ther neck as it can be awkward with cattle moving back/forward in the headgate.
