I have a 5.1 surround sound speaker set that I was running off an old Pioneer receiver for gaming. I've gotten a new xBox, it and the TV use eARC I think. I'm looking for the cheapest way to keep the speakers working, do I need a new receiver or is there a simpler piece of kit?? This will only ever be used with the xbox so simple is fine

Not to Necro but just in case this is still a concern. If your old receiver does not support eARC you should be able to set the TV fallback to the older ARC format, again presuming your receiver supports that. You'll miss out on the newer lossless surround formats but will get basic 5.1 surround, essentially it's the same support as SPDIF just over HDMI.
Do you need the newer HDMI 2.1 gaming features between your TV and xBox (120Hz/HDR etc.)? If so then yep ARC is probably your best bet until you can upgrade the receiver. If not you could run the xBox through the receiver first (and from there to the TV) and not compromise on sound quality, no ARC involved.
