Hi I work in a general business error. I'm interested in getting to a higher managerial level down the line.

I was thinking that a background in accountancy could perhaps be beneficial. I don't intend to ever practice as an accountant, it would be more so that I understand the language of business and finance.

Would doing something like CIMA fit the bill?

You would be better off going with an MBA to be honest.
These courses give introductuary accounting prep for debits and credits which is all you need in your case.

Senior management come from all kinds of backgrounds: marketing, finance, engineering etc....

What they all have in common is well developed political skills.

An MBA is far more than I'd be looking to do. I'm just looking for something to give me a background in accounting so that I better understand it.

Perhaps this might be more in your line: https://www.accaglobal.com/an/en/qualifications/glance/acca/diploma.html

Well that is the reality, you won't get to senior management at any major corporation without being a skillful politician, it's called office politics and it is every bit as the better know version of public representation and government.

There is a limited number of positions at the top and very often getting one of them requires you to push someone else out.

UCD run a Finance for Non Financial Managers course https://www.ucd.ie/professionalacademy/findyourcourse/finance_for_non_financial_managers/

No experience with the UCD courses myself but came across it while looking at online courses during lockdown.

ACCA offer a diploma in accounting which is essentially the first three introductory ACCA exams.

There is an intro to Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Business Technology module.

Its a handy intro course and the exams are computer based and on demand so you can do them whenever suits.

It can be done in 6 months.
