Are you only here for the plug? It'd be considerate of you to mention you're the owner of this website. Instead of giving a bias opinion which isn't genuine.

If someone else comes along and says hey I found this website it's good for what you're looking for, fair enough.

Don't you mean to say 'my site driveflow..'

You literally mention it being your site here:

OP, that website is very expensive for what's on offer. There's a paid for app on the Play store (I am not affiliated!) called Irish Driving Test Routes that has all the routes for a fraction of the cost. No paying through your nose to unlock specific routes. They're all included.

It is a subscription though, so make sure to cancel the subscription (I think it's about 3-4 euro) after the month.

I downloaded it the month of my test, paided the 3 or 4 euro or whatever it was, practiced my test centre routes every night using the app and passed first try. Then unsubscribed from the app immediately.

Yes sorry, I am the owner however I struggle to see how it makes a difference. I'm not forcing to buy, simply just saying heres a site that could help you out.

I will say it's mine in future

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 Liamoc05

Ehhh I've never seen this, every other site offers 15 euro a month that I've seen. Could you link the app please?

I've used driveflow for a Dublin test centre and while it's not perfect, it's quite handy to familiarise yourself with the routes. I offered to try it out for the owner, so I didn't pay for it. It's a point a-b-c-d etc google maps thing which was useful. I personally think it would be best opened up on all the routes and for a shorter period of time, making it easier on the owner and the customer. My Daughter used it a few times on the route I requested and thankfully she passed her test.

Hi Ghost, I was curious to see how you found it. You say it's not perfect and I am fully aware of this but could you tell me some specifics that could be improved upon. I really hate that because I want users to have the best tracking software (google maps), the price I have to pay is the points.

I know what your saying about the first route being free and your definitely right about it but there's just something about spending hundreds of hours with a team putting it together then giving it for free.

Also congratulations to your daughter, glad she was able use driveflow to help even in the slightest. I love to hear that I'm helping people even a tiny tiny amount.

Sure. You've asked on thread, so i'll lay it out here for everyone to see. For the sake of ease, i'm just going to call it an APP rather than a site with pre-determined google map drive points, even though it's not an APP and probably should be APP based.

For anyone reading, with driveflow.ie, you purchase access to a test centre and there are a few different test routes available. My local centre has 5 possible routes and is consistently the centre with the highest fail rate. The driveflow APP lets you pick a route and prompts you to go to Google Maps with a point to point driving route, with planned stops along the way. So you drive from point A and then to B and C and so on. There are usually about 5 points to drive to.

So, the account access was provided as a thank you for suggestions made on another thread. It was only used for 4 journeys before the test at the local centre and it was helpful if for nothing else, to get my Daughter out practicing in the test area. My Son was in the car for the first 2 and he said the problem he had was on the longer stretches between points, the google maps would pop up with alternative route suggestions. This could be fixed if more stopping points were available. I didn't have this problem when I went out the following day.

The problem I had was that it is only a route planner and not a proper testing aid. It helps you familiarise yourself with the route. I think that is really helpful, but I also think it needs more. For the price paid (which is low in fairness), if I were in charge, I would just open up all the test centre routes for the customer for a limited time, or monthly sub. This would simplify the purchase for both parties.

The concern of account sharing is not worth the obstacle of limiting the test centre choice on purchase. Customers might accept a test at another centre at short notice and this is where the service is really needed, but is hindered by limiting the purchaser to one centre. You won't have many people sharing their credentials for such a cheap service and any that do are only spreading the name of your service, which is cheap marketing for the owner and worth every cent.

What I would like to see is a service that not only covers the routes, but tracks the speed, brings the driver to the hill start locations and the turn about locations and those things they will experience on a test. Voice prompts for the next turn etc would be really useful, as the examiner also gives directions verbally. I don't know how practical those things are, but it should be possible in an APP. If not voice prompts, then a text prompt that the companion licensed driver could read out, acting as the examiner.

If you must stick to google maps in the current form, you should atleast include the hillstart and turnabout locations for each route. This could be achieved by linear links. So, the driver chooses route option "C" and instead of going directly to the google maps, they are brought to a web page which shows the location of the hillstart and turnabout locations. A link on that page then brings the driver to the google map. I hope that's useful.

My Brother will be doing his test in March. He is open to other test centres, but your service limits us to using only one centre unless more money is paid, which devalues the service because he would have been practicing on routes for one centre and may have to pay extra for a different test centre. It's a real limiting factor and imo, will hurt sales. I would market the service as one that gives drivers access to all test centre routes.

I'm mystified why threads like this exist - the obvious answer is ask your instructor.

If you're not taking lessons at least once a week, you're not serious about passing the test.

There could be any number of reasons why threads like this exist.

This one specifically could be here because the OP is socially anxious and is unable to ask their instructor for help. The new account registration might point to this.

The OP might not have an instructor and might have completed their lessons months ago in a different location.

They might have asked their instructor and received no reply, or an unclear reply.

People come here for help for all sorts of reasons where there might appear to be an obvious answer, but there is a reason why they have come here. We can either choose to join the conversation and help, or not.

Some might be mystified as to why some people feel it necessary to say they are mystified by some threads.

Thanks so much for this response.

1 - all the other apps i've seen in ireland have horrible reviews due to their 'poor tracking and 'glitchy ui' so I decided on google maps for the best possible tracking as I myslef couldn't even come close to making half the tracking system they have already

2 - I will be setting up a system whereby upon test centre change for a cancellation or whatever other reason they can send me an email (later I will add it so that it could be a click of a button but with maybe x changes max so it doesnt get abused)

3 - Love the idea of the hill start and turnabout on another page but I don't know how practical it would be to bring them to yet another page. I will definitely try this out as currently it is the biggest flaw of the site.

4 - what you said about your son bringing out your daughter and it recommending other routes, there is only one fix to this and thats adding more nodes. With more nodes comes more 'next step' clicks which I was trying to reduce as they can lead to some confusion. HOWEVER I could add this for yourself and others and see how it works.

I would love to give you access to any test route you need and I will add more nodes to see how it works out.

Thanks so much for all this feedback it helps me out so much. All the best.

    1. You should be apble to use Google Maps API to use as a base for the driving instructions. Google allow this as long as it;s not getting re-branded and is for educational use.
    2. Don't do the email thing. Either it's immediately available, or not. Nobody wants to wait for an email response/change if they have a test cancellation for the following day(s). Once again, you're adding unnecessary work for yourself.
    3. Many test routes will overlap for hill starts and turnabout locations. Adding another page with this info will be easy and will not detract from the user experience. Better to have this built into the navigation with instructions, but an easy, cheap method is what I suggested.
    4. Ideally, nodes would trigger next step instructions, but in any case, better to have them rather than rerouting on the test route.

Keep my account open and i'll request different centres if appropriate. Most likely it will be the same one unless my Brother takes a cancellation somewhere else in Dublin. If you can unlock access to all Dublin and Meath centres, that would be great, as these are the ones he might take a test in.

Okay perfect, and if you could let me know the test he decides on or gets a cancellation for I would like to put in one with fewer nodes and one with many more nodes to remove that problem you were having.

    Thanks for everything.

    ffs

The OP might not have an instructor and might have completed their lessons months ago in a different location.

Completed their lessons? This is a BS mentality, the idea that one knows it all despite not having passed one's test yet. Anyone serious about passing their test needs to keep taking regular lessons. No wonder the failure rate is so ridiculously high.

If their instructor is crap or they don't get on with their instructor, there are plenty of other ones.

The rerouting while on a test route is very frustrating. I tried it with my son a few days ago and we gave up half way through as it was difficult to determine what the actual test route was, Tallaght Route 6. It also really needs voice prompts.

I'll try it again this week as maybe it's just a lack of familiarity with the "app" but I'd agree with Ghost and add more nodes so the test route stays "fixed' and doesn't offer alternative directions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,726 ✭✭✭Allinall

test routes should be changed at random, if the test is to have any credibility.

You don't see people looking for leaving certificate questions in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,292 ✭✭✭✭User1998

What? Did you even do a leaving cert? There are mock exams that go back 20 years and there's usually only a certain amount of questions that can be asked. So you pick a few and memorise them. Exactly like the test routes for your driving test.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,189 ✭✭✭J_R

Regarding practicing test routes, as a retired driving instructor may I input my 2 cents..

I never taught my pupils how to navigate over set routes. Instead .I taught them how to drive to a standard that they could safely and competently deal with any junction either in the test or later in their lifetime of everyday driving. .

I did of course go over any non-standard junctions. Explain possible hidden dangers etc but to just endlessly bring them over the exact routes – never

When I hear of an instructor teaching the test routes I immediately think of a circus ringmaster training little doggies to run around a ring performing tricks, jumping through hoops etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,076 ✭✭✭quenching

Tried again yesterday and the constant rerouting makes it very tricky to figure out the actual test route while driving. This definitely needs more nodes for busy areas, might be fine for routes with less traffic but for Tallaght it's nearly impossible to use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,189 ✭✭✭J_R

I think this thread it is a sad reflection on the teaching standards of driving instructors.

Reading it, it appears that the instructors are unable to instill in their pupils sufficient confidence to sit the driving test without knowing the exact routes. And endlessly practise those same routes.

A properly trained learner know they are good and should be quietly confident they can handle any normal driving situation.

The test is easy, just necessary to give the nice government man a safe drive around town.

There is a saying "A poor workman blames his tools", poor instructors blame the severity of the test, the harshness of the examiners.

In reality the examiners are basically nice guys, they will pass if they can, however they will and must fail if they consider the driver is a danger to themselves or others.

Yeah I've found this really annoying but I am currently working on it for all test routes. As when I was putting them in at the start I assumed that the less nodes was better but obviously not.
