Wouldn't it be such a different place if you couldn't hide behind a username?

Imagine if hovering your mouse over a username on Boards, or any social media account, gave you the person's full name and location.

Would half of us even want to use such forums or accounts if that was the case?

I remember being on another site. And i mentioned something that was quite a bit deal in Dublin.
I got a pm off someone saying they new who i was and they didnt live to far away.

They didnt get my exact location but they where not too far away from it.

Name changed and stop putting so many details out there.

Did you invite them over for tea? Some fcuking weirdos on the internets, so what if people know others identities, shur I know a couple of people on here, I don't feel the need to intimidate them over it, people truly have fcuk all to be doing with themselves

You could argue that he did you a favour there. Someone smarter with more self discipline could have found out more and then just turned up at your place.

I have no problem stating my online views in real life. I don't see the point in gimmick posters who act differently online, that crap seems tiring, always having to play a role and remember to act different than you really are.

The issue isn't me or others being afraid to put my real name online, the issue is the ****ing weirdos out there who would go to your house or workplace just because you didn't agree with their conspiracy theory or some other such nonsense.

I mean, it's not impossible for someone with the 'know-how' to track down anyone on the internet, getting their full name, address, etc etc

Anonymity on the internet........ Far less than most people would think.

Would the world be a different place if everyone wore a tag with their full name and address?

To topic -- almost nobody is "hiding" as such. We are just being courteous enough to not overload you with the unnecessary information. With a bit of effort, you can find out who I am and where I live. But do you want to know this, really? Suppose I am an unpleasant person with extreme political views, would you like to come and tell me that you do not agree with me in person? You would be safer if you don't, and I will be safer if you don't too. So let's keep things pseudo-anonymous and pretend that we are untraceable.

That's the problem if you, like me, have your real name on Twitter. You have to be nice most of the time and reasonable and totally pc, or it could come back and bite you some day.

But doesn't the 'mob' only want to cancel people who are known or high profile, to make a point.

There wouldn't be much point launching a campaign to cancel a middle aged factory worker in some small Irish town just because he said something controversial on the internet.

it happens when that person has facts to back up what they allude to in posts.
government\s are the main culprit and do anything to hide.
Not tin hat and plenty of "restrictions" used to silence.
look at "mother baby" recent and government attempt to bury it
    with restricted access.

I'd just start sending pigeons to people. With little things around their feet saying "You sir, are out of line. I disagree."

    Or "Madam" for the ladies.
