Can anyone advise on how to restrict searches to Ireland only on any search engine. I have tried Google, Yahoo, Duck-Duck-Go to no avail. The 'Ireland only' control which some sites have, doesn't work.

Try adding site:.ie to restrict searching for websites with the .ie domain.

Use google.ie and then in Tools > Change Any Country to Ireland. That works for me generally, or else do as mentioned above and restrict results to the .ie domain.

I'm having some success on Bing by typing loc:ie after my search. The region select button, which I have set to Ireland only, doesn't work.
